35's and 3.55 isn't exactly horrible with all the engine mods I've done but it definitely isn't great and I've always planned on regearing(a no-brainer with big tires).

The scoop: I want my power back but it is still my DD and I have to be able to drive on the highway 65-70mph to get to surf spots, camping spots, off road spots, and snowboarding spots. I was thinking about 4.56 to keep my rpm's down but I've read a lot of people aren't very happy with 4.56 and wish they were at 4.88. So, with all your experience enlighten me as far as what I can expect as far as power, torque, mpg's, and rpm's at 65-70mph on the highway with 4.56 and with 4.88. I'm pretty sure 5.13's are a no go with moderate highway use.

Use the gear calculator at www.grimmjeeper.com

It will allow you to do a side by side comparison of 2 different gear ratios.

i ran 35's with 5.38's

was just fine on the highway.

did 70-75 mph all day long with no issues.

32 hours straight at one time and 10k miles in one month.

15 mpg in a completely loaded down xj with wheeling and camping gear to support 3 guys for a month.

i wouldnt run any higher than 4.88s. deep gears arent the devil.

The "what gears you running with 35's" thread that's currently 2 below this one wasn't answering your question? What about the 10 gearing questions that have been asked within the last few days?

Seriousoffroad... Thank you for that never seen it before. I'm going to have to do some number crunching and research and plug and play. Terrific calculator.

KTM... Always love your builds. What Rpm's were you running on the highway on the 5.38's? If I remember correctly you had an AW4 and that sounds really encouraging.

DeftwillP.. Haven't had much time to browse the forum lately ease up a bit... Appreciate the input however.

If your smart about this run 4.56 and do a 421 transfercase and you'll be perfect as a daily driver, if your planning on going full width later on that's when I will suggest above 5. Gear ratios but for now my opinion is 4.56 because I have personal experience with 4.88 and on the highway the rpm is high as hell the speed we drive 75-80
