You need to hit the road, bro. You have no idea what people are capable of. Some people can't, sure. But those people most likely know who they are and won't try. Some people are unsure of whether they can or can't.... they may or may not succeed. Then there are those that KNOW that they can, just haven't done it yet. There's a difference between cautioning someone to make sure they do AAAALLLLLL their research and know FOR SURE what they're getting into before tackling such a big job, and coming in here like an arrogant know-it-all and telling someone, who they don't even know, they can't do it.
Your attitude is poison... and I'm getting sick of seeing posts of this nature from you. This forum isn't here to tell people they can't do stuff... we're here to help where we can but keep peoples' feet on the ground at the same time. I'll bet YOU would've told me I CAN'T convert my Jeep to 4wd because I wasn't a professional mechanic. Guess what buddy.... 2WD BY THE ****IN' VIN!

give me break, i was trying to help, changing r& p gears is not for the beginner, unless you have supervision from someone w/ experience doing it. there is that better. perhaps you should hit the road you may be too sensitive to be here. in the future if you dont like my posts dont read them.
But as far as your **** poor attitude of "if you don't like my posts, don't read them" this is a public, MODERATED, forum. If you don't like the things that people say about your posts, perhaps you should think about what you say first before you make yourself look like a pompous blowhard.

Then maybe you should have said that instead of what you said. I'm not sensitive to anything. If you'd have said it to me, I would have blown you off... you said it to someone that came here asking for advice, not to be belittled by an *******... so I stepped in on someone else's behalf. Learn the difference.

Keep it up, and it will be moderated. **** poor attitudes don't fly around here.

well you spoke your mind & made your point, and i replied to it. i thought it was over but apparently not for you, and now you have sunk to name calling using inappropriate langauge on a public forum. i should report you to the mods. i suggest you just get over it and STFU.

Hello Jeep community!
This is my first time using a forum so be gentle..
I installed 31x10.5 Micky Thompsons on my 96 jeep Cherokee with a straight 4 5 speed manual. Now my 5th gear is basically useless! What my question is, what gear ratio would be best to regain some power without sacrificing much MPG, and is it expensive? Do i need a professional to do install the new gears or is it something I could do with my dad in our garage?
Thanks!

Originally when I had the 4.10s and 35s and it was slow/sluggish and 5th gear was non existent and fuel mileage was terrible with no a/c...what would last me 5days of gas in getting close to 2 weeks of gas now...not exact on mileage but I commute 50 more or less miles a day for dd duties...
I would have loved to learn to regear but I don't have the tools/space to learn At the moment but if you got it and study/research a lot of regearing I'm sure you'll get it...

My thoughts as well.....
Imho 4.56 gearing isn't gonna give you enough room to potentially grow, or in other words I personally don't think that is "enough" of a change to justify the very significant investment (time and money). If 31s are enough to give you issues with power, 4.56s may get you your 5th gear back now, but what if you catch the VERY contagious "Jeep bug" and decide to go just a little bigger next time lol. If you're gonna put the time and money into it I personally say go ahead to 4.88s. As said before not knowing what your, and your father's, level of experience and mechanical ability is it's hard to say whether you can do it or not, but it is a fairly tedious and measurement heavy process that's gonna take even the best of us a good amount of time to pull off correctly. You're gonna need a dial indicator to measure the gears in the .0001" range, and a micrometer or very accurate dial caliper to be able to pick shims out equally as precise, a dial or beam In/Lb torque wrench to measure the bearing preload, a big breaker bar (and a cheater pipe on that lol) to be able to crush the crush sleeve. This can also be done with a powerful impact gun however, it is very easy to go "too far" and once you do there's no going back you'll have to change the crush sleeve and try again, and also the vibrations and impacts from the tool can damage the bearing rollers or races just barely enough to affect their long term health so I personally would never recommend using one tbh. FWIW, Chrysler teaches to use a 600 Ft/Lb torque wrench to set the crush sleeve and pinion bearing preload. Also will need a way to get bearings on and off, various ways of doing this with and without special tools. Having said all of that, its just nuts and bolts when you get down to it, anyone with basic hand tools can physically take a rear end apart and put it back together. Patience, CAREFUL measurements, and only a couple specialized tools are required to get it back together right. Watch some vids on it, YouTube is your friend here, and you and your dad can decide if its something you want to tackle.
