Default Gear grinding?

I just got a Spartan locker for my ford 8.8 31 spline, but I have 4.88 gears shoved in there so the ring gear is too thick to remove the cross pin. I really don't want to have go through the trouble of removing the whole carrier so after a lot of thread searching, I still cant decide if it's safe to grind a couple of the ring gear teeth to get the cross pin shaft out or not. Any thoughts? Experiences? Thanks a lot guys
