Default gas tank skid

i got a gas tank skid from the junkyard and i noticed the xj i pulled it off of didnt have the plastic cover over the gas tank and my xj has the plastic cover. so can i install the skid over the plastic cover or take off the plastic cover first then install the skid? thanks.

mines a 94 and the one at the jy that the skid came off of is a 95.

it doesnt look like the plastic cover does much but it looks like ill have to undo the straps and drop the tank just to get it off. and id rather not do all that work if i dont have to.

I have mine over the plastic cover. A floor jack helps when putting it in place.

Jack it up till it pops in there.

i used a big knife to cut the plastic away where it was hitting, then it bolted right up. But you would have done that anyway, it just makes sense.

I just did the same job! but I did things too fast without looking and without thinking!!
1º I removed the plastic cover while breaking the rusty J bolt...
2º I realize I was dumb!!
3º I put the skid plate in place and that skid is now holding my gas tank..
4º im taking a little second break to make sure my next move will be better than the first one

is the plastic cover important?
the strap definitively is and ill drop the skid plate down again to put it but what about the plastic cover?? do I just trash it or I try to adjust it to the skid plate
