Front replacement speakers - Recommendations?
Hi Everyone,
Front speakers are out in my 98 XJ Sport so I'm going to go through and repair the wiring sometime over the next weekend. I'm guessing the stock speakers are pretty bad, and a pair of speakers costs much less than I thought they would, so while I'm in there I figure I might as well replace the speakers with something a little better than the originals.Anyone have any suggestions I could check out? I listen to mostly classic / hard rock.
Not looking to break the bank, blow my eardrums, or get massive bass response (jeep has enough rattle already) but I figure there's probably a set out there that works pretty good for the money.
Thanks!

After speaking with a Crutchfield rep I ended up getting these: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_20641DS...654.html?tp=95
Very happy with my decision.

Check Best Buy for sales. I picked up 2 sets of really nice JVC 6.5" speakers for $40 and they are fantastic after I set up my audio through my head unit.

I would just make sure the stock speakers aren't the problem
I have no issue with you buying new speakers, I did too
BUT the wiring on our Xj's through the doors can break and cause the speakers to work or play intermittingly. I am having the same problem with my speakers in the rear pod too!
I am probably going to rewire all speakers from head unit to all speakers

X3 on the Kickers. I run dual soundbars, and have the 6.5's in the front soundbar, and 5x7's in the rear. No sub, and sounds great. Even with the doors off.

Even if you have to rewire them, new speakers are always a good idea. I have the ones that Bocefus listed, but the Kickers seem to be popular too.
Speaking of which, I do have to rewire mine. My drivers door speaker doesn't work after the door has been opened. Strangely enough, hitting the door lock button makes it work until the next time the door is open

Oh its definitely a wiring issue in the door boot, speakers occasionally go on then off. I was going to tackle them last time I had the panel off to repair the master window switch but just didn't get around to it.
Just figured for 50 to 80 bucks it's a worthwhile investment. FWIW I have a sub and amp installed from the previous owner too, so might as well get a decent sound all around.
Thanks again for the help and suggestions everyone!

I have the factory Jensen's in mine but I have always liked Polk audio speakers. Check Walmart.com
They have just about every brand and they are usually way cheaper than anywhere else

In my '95, I only have 2 speakers, and those are cheap 5.25" Audiovox/Jensens and they do surprisingly well for what they are.

I don't have the model number with me, but when I did my door speakers, I put in some JVC 6.5" "marine" (boat) speakers. The it looked like I was getting a little water inside my door when I bought her anyway, and that was with a little old lady driving her . . . so I figured that if I was going to be sinking her up to her doors in mud, it might be a good idea to have something a little more water resistent in there just in case.
Just throwing that out there. Price wasn't any different and they sound pretty good too.

I just changed the head unit and front and rear speakers in my '89 XJ and (my speakers needed to be 5 1/4 but this will still apply to you) I bought 2 pairs of Kenwood speakers with built in tweeters that came with the needed wiring harnesses for free from CrutchField.com for a grand total of $78.98 and they are great. Takes a few days of breaking in I noticed but they are great, they even have fairly good bass but I wasn't intending to use these speakers for bass. Just the mid and high tones. If you want heavy base I advice investing in a subwoofer and amp which can actually not be as expensive as one would think if you look hard. And the speakers I got fit without drilling it was insane, I didn't use the grill covers that came with it though so they would fit behind the stock covers. Hope that helped

When purchasing speakers, look for RMS power to match that of amplifier channel.

Thanks everyone, and thanks Steve for the clarification.
I have a MTX Thunder 302 under the backseat powering a 2 subwoofer cabinet in the back (both from the previous owner) - not sure but it looks like this amp is only enough to power the sub cabinet and not the front speakers.
Honestly know nothing about audio setups so this has all been pretty helpful. I'll probably just repair the wiring in the door boot and go with the plug and play option.
