front locker question

Default front locker question

I have never had a locked vehicle before so I am trying to figure it out... If i run a locker up front, will it be completely open if in 2wd??? I am looking for something streetable as well.... maybe lsd in back and locker up front??? Just tryin to figure it all out... thanks guys

I'm old school and started in drag cars replacing lsd's with lockers and spools. Then I got in trouble for racing where I shouldn't have. Then I got into jeeps. I've always ran rear lockers. Or both front and rear

Really depends on the locker. Selectable yes it'll be open but auto no exactly. It won't engauge in 2wd but you may notice it from time to time. Unless you don't ever plan to wheel anything other than fire road I wouldn't suggest a LSD. They are best for street driven vehicles that may see snow but not mud, rocks or any decent trail.

I will be mostly in mud... i just figured that lsd rear is better than open and would have better manners on the road....

I run Detroit Lockers front and rear and my front when not in 4wd isn't noticeable at all and very quiet not like a lunchbox.

Spartan front. Completely unnoticeable to me in 2 WD.

At first very noticable-loud unloading and load turnig hard left.now after breakin and hevy gear oil not as noticeable.You get used to it.

hd diff covers work well also to quiet them

LSD in the mud will work like an open diff. You have to use the brake with it to make both tires spin but in mud you need the wheel speed and can't do that with the brakes on.

I have a Powertrax No-Slip in the rear of my XJ. Costs more than the average locker (like a Spartan for example) but it was worth it. Barely noticeable on the street unless you are asking for it (like giving it 3/4 throttle in the middle of a 90 degree turn). Its also very quiet, though I do run 70w-140 gear oil. WORTH NOTING however that it may chew up your tires a bit. I've got some jagged shallow scalloping on the tread blocks (looks like a chew toy almost hah) but I haven't lost any grip on asphalt for it yet.

Honestly if I was thinking about locking an XJ front axle I'd be less worried about driveability and more about whether I'd break the axle offroad.

I run an Aussie in front, and I never notice it in 2wd. I have a Detroit in rear, and I barely noticed any difference in that either.

Exactly as many of us did to learn about our XJ's, I'm old and a Drag Racer for over 50 yrs. but new to Jeeps so live and learn.

If I had to drive mine every day I'd either go with a selectable or limited slip in the rear. The fact that making a sharp turn from a stand still almost always results in a tire chirp from an enthusiastic auto-locker would kill me after a while.

Mine won't chirp unless I want it to it's called throttle control
