Default Front drive shaft vibration with NP242 ?

I am looking at lifting my 01' XJ 6" and have read that a NP242 on a Dana 30 low pinion will cause unacceptable drive line vibrations while in part time or full time four wheel drive. Anyone have any real experience with this? Is it just another disclaimer or a serious problem I'll run into once it's lifted? Any of you 99' and later XJ folk have problems with yours?

Welp, I was refraining from posting since I have no actual experience with this but since it's been 6 hours since you posted it...

I would guess that they are refering to the fact that you'll have some crazy driveline angles with a LP D30. Why don't you find a nice HPD30 at a yard and swap it in?

Is it too late to talk you out of lifting it 6"?

Hey there's no such thing as a dumb question. It's better to be sure than guess. I can swap into a HP 30 that I have handy but it takes time and money. And if it's not necessary than it was something I wanted to avoid since the LP is newly gone through. But that brings me back to why someone would want to talk me out of a 6" lift. What's a better way to go? I was lookin at a T&T custom. Tell me more..

I know it's mostly preference, and if all your doing is bombing thru the deep mud, then yea, biggers kinda better. But for versatility, slightly less lift, big tires, bump stops and skids are where it's at. Low cog man!

Long arm would reduce your chance of having vibration due to pinion angle.

I hve an 01 with a 5.5" lift and, not to stop you from doing it but, you will probably get vibes.

After I went to 5.5, I swapped a HP axel, have an SYE and new DS's, and still vibe slightly. Freeways are always a joy. Hopefully you don't mind driving with the windows down and music blasting. I refer to my jeep as "interactive" driving with all the noises.
Swapping the LP is a must if you go that high tho.

Thank you, that is all very usefully information. I imagine driveline vibes are hard to avoid all together let alone with that year and a LP30. This forum has been pretty awesome.

I have a 2000 with a 4.5" RC lift with the LP 30 and have no problems. This is my DD and wheeler running 33" tires. I did do some body triming tho.

This is a little off but I'll ask here before creating a new thread. Can an NP242 be driven without the front drive-shaft on a daily basis? The idea being to just put it in at the trail-head while waiting for the tires to air-down.

And a side question and at the risk of asking a dumb question, how does the NP242 (or other) front drive even work without a slip-yoke somewhere in the system?

I go shaft-less all the time..... I hate long trips on the freeway with the front shaft in!!! My non jeep friends think I'm crazy but.. I don't care.

Hey guys. Infinitely sorry to resuscitate this nearly 3 year old thread; I have the exact set up that a few of you do and we are very few and far between so I'm hoping to find some brethren. I figured this wouldn't be considered necrobumping, since we are all talking about Jeeps that range the span of 30 years.

I've been minutes from the looney bin trying to decide whether to even try and lift my 01 with the NP242 and LPD30. I've downloaded 60+forum threads in the last 3 weeks as a newbie learning everything I can about these and the more I learn, the more discouraged I get with regard to my stock rig.

This thread finally brought some semblance of hope. Would any of you be willing to resurrect this discussion and help a new convert out?

I can link to the new thread I created if anyone wants me to. Thanks in advance guys. This forum is awesome.

Default It's better to resurrect an old thread than start a new one!

Everything worked out well for me, there is good info here. I stuck with a 4.5" BDS long arm lift, used a Tom Woods Slip Yoke Eliminator and custom drive shaft. The jeep rides like a Cadillac! Detroit locker rear end with 4:10's, goes through anything!

What you should watch for; with the lpd30 is to not lift it without adjustable control arms. The adjustable lower control arms and uppers if can manage will adjust your chamber so you don't get vibration or death wobble.
My suggestion would be to keep it around 4.5-5.5" of lift and you shouldn't run into too many problems if you do what was discussed. And the NP242 is the best Tcase out there, love mine. It's smooth riding with it in full time 4x4, no binding and easy terrain transitions. Only down fall was that the SYE and drive shaft were a lil pricey.. But worth it!
