The center of your drag link is almost 3" higher than the center of your track bar.

Just noticed a popping noise in the gear box, but from reading, gear box by itself cant cause it.

Your measurement, is that from the tie rod end to bushing? I am about 2 inches of from end to end between the drag link and track bar, since the drag link dictates the stearing truness, do we set the track bar to the drag link?

So I see what your saying, and it looks like its the heim mounts causing them to no be parallel. It looks like if we moved the heim to the top of the pitman it would be corrected and I see some that have done that. Is there any reason we can move the the draglink and heim to the top of the pitman?

i tried everything under the sun to get rid of death wobble. it even did it while being towed. finally added a second steering shock absorber and that did the trick.

Basically you can move stuff around as long as it is solid when you are done. But as it is, the dynamics of the bump is that your wheels move to the passenger side and then bounce back the other way when the axle comes back down. It is enough to set up a resonance for the death wobble. You also might want to brace that dropped pitman arm frame bracket

How old is the steering stabilizer? It might not be the proper "fix" but it could get rid of the wobble.

thats bad advice imo...that would just be masking the problem if it somehow made a "noticeable" difference

I know it's just a bandaid, I had the wobble on mine and just put on a new stabilizer until the front end had enough wear in it that I could pinpoint witch parts I needed to replace.

What I am getting at is that since it is dropped, you have more leverage on what passes for a frame in an XJ. If you run a brace to the other side from where it bolts to the track bar it will stiffen it. Even a little more strength helps

This is your problem, period.

Either move you track bar up, move the drag link to under the knuckle (if you can clear the steering), I have seen people mount the hiem above the pit man arm, or invest in something with better geometry.

Popping when turning is usually the track bar frame mount bracket behind your steering box slipping across the frame.
A brace that tights the passenger side to the driver side for the track bar mount will help.

I should have been more clear, I know everyone is trying to help and this specific topic is beat to death across all of the forums, so I really appreciate everyone offering ideas. The popping noise is definitely in the gearbox you physically can feel it when placing hand on it, there is no popping or noises from the pitman on. My son, being a teen, didn't want to listen to ol dad when I said the 35 X 12.50 were too much for the tired gear box..."ahhh they'll be fine dad"....Dad 1, Son 0.

The track bar and the gear box are frame braced with aftermarket kits. We used a drop pitman when we put the lift on, at the time the jeep still had the stock bushings and tie rods. Since that time we began updating the rest of the 230k tired components, including going to the Heims, my son wanted them. I never looked to see how much the heims changed the location of the original mount points, so his drop at the pitman is now 4.5 or so instead of the intended 2", making the track and drag link not parallel. We are going to try the stock pitman to see if it makes back the difference and go from there. I will keep the post updated with progress.

Try changing the steering box.
