Fender trimming but stock look?
So I love the stock look of my XJ, but I get a bit of rubbing when I'm off road... so I guess I need to do the needful and do some fender trimming. BUT I want to keep as stock looking as possible. Is there any tips or products out there you would recommend?

Taller bump stops will stop the rubbing.

They don't mimic the 84-96 XJ flares' looks as well as the 97+, but Notch Customs's flares look great if need to cut. Bump stops should be all you need to stop rubbing, however.

It is possible to trim the fenders and leave the fender flare mounting holes in place.
|
Smaller tires or better lift for more clearance but nothing replaces a good trimming of the fender wells if you really want to let your XJ flex out. Really need more info on what specs the lift and other mods done.
|
You could trim up to the headlight like the 97+ models.

3.5" metal cloak lift kit 31x9.5" tires. That's it. When I disco the front sway bar, it rubs. |

Where is it rubbing and when?

This is the thread I used to cut my fenders and flares. https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f58/cu...-flares-48847/ . There is a link for the rear fender, about half way through, that has a little more info if I remember right. There's several pics of mine bout halfway down on page 4 but here's a couple of my finished job.
Front: https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...c69fe23798.jpg Rear: https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...9a3a923947.png Those are stock height too. It looks like this now with about 2 inches of lift: https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.che...db8d089c06.jpg It was a fairly warm day so I only used a utility knife to cut the flares. My best advise is to score the flare first then make a couple more passes to finish the cut. This way you have a little room for error before its completely cut. Also I went to Lowe's and got some of those plastic interior panel fasteners to attach the flare to the fender instead of bolts. Holds great and is easily removable. I'd do a write up but I already have one, along with other people, sitting in limbo in the write up section. Good luck! |

WOO. I've got my Notch XJ-Max mounted on the front. Really happy with how they're looking so far. Still need to sand and paint (and get teh back ones done), but I think I might be able to ditch my extended bump stops now and if that's the case, I'm going to be able to stuff like CRAZY with these babies. |
