i found out that my father in law has a 2002 jeep grand Cherokee with the 4.7...i was told that was a dana 44? true? would that work in the XJ???

should be a dana 44 with the aluminum center section.
has a larger pinion gear than the standard dana 44. but the aluminum center is a big downfall for most of us along with less aftermarket support.
not worth swapping in my opinion.

Plus the GC is coil sprung - the XJ is leafs & the GC is more than likely 3.73 gears & the XJ is (prob.) 3.55 (if automatic).

Plus it is wider than a stock XJ axle. But if you do want to part it out I would reccomend taking the brake booser, master cylinder, knuckles, ball joints, calipers, rotors, tie rod ends, and drag link ends. You can use them to get a huge steering and braking upgrade, but you have to get some jks hub adapters and track bar relocation bracket and then build a new track bar, tie rod, and drag link. You can also swap in the GC seats if you want too.
