When choosing a motor ask yourself what will be the main purpose of your rig, Just like when choosing a lift. Ex: I was using my Xj on a farm to go out in the field where our 2wd tractor couldn't go to pull the sprayers n wagons. I needed TQ not HP for that job so I went with an IH tractor motor. Not fast but pulls strong. As for the lift, I don't need much and 31s are a dime a dozen so I went with 4" lift and 31s.

My jeep has a chevy motor, chevy transmission, chevy doubler transfer case, chevy rear transfer case, chevy front axle, and a chevy rear axle.
318s are turds. Of all the commonly available v8s to use for a swap, thats one of the last I would consider. But hey, not my jeep, not my problem, if you already have it and wanna use it, go for it.

and as far as "318s are turds" you must not have much experience with them to be spreading that kind of BS.
I have had at least a dozen 318 powered vehicles over the years; there is a reason I stick with them.... they just work without complaining and they have proven extremely dependable that is #1 important to me...
No qualms with the 4.0s at all (I currently own 2 jeeps with that engine already, and not my 1st ones either) but I was thinking of doing something different with this one especially since its engine compartment is bare, I already have a 4.0 XJ (wife's daily driver) and I AM SICK AND F#@ING TIRED OF SEEING CHEVY JUNK IN EVERYTHING!!!
There is a reason Chevy is so dang cheap..... that's why I DON'T want anything to do with one...

From 1967 to 1991, and the 318 Magnum in 1992, 318s were Chrysler's main engine of choice...

Whats the reason? 318's are cheap too. theres millions of them in junk yards and scrap heaps.
...yeah and the "magnum" shares NOTHING IN COMMON besides the crank (even though it has a different part#) with the old LA blocks. Same displacement, but not relevant here.

if you have it set the engine in and see how it looks
I put a Nissan diesel in a Cherokee years back and the Mercedes om617a is a popular swap also and there are a few cummins 4bt also if it was me and I had a open engine bay to play with I would do a cummins 4bt
http://www.dieselbombers.com/diesel-engine-conversions/
(Its your dream make it happen how you want )
rule #1 do not think inside the box tear it apart and use it for a step-stool do do your mod
rule #2 if you want it then do it
and the 4.0 is an excellent engine I think it is probably the most durable and longest production of any engine ever
it was a rambler started in 62 I believe I owned one indestructible same block the heads and emissions have evolved over the years
my mods
87 cherokee rd28 nissan diesel
99 f350 5.9 cummins
97 s10 mercedes om617a
cherokee still runs but I am looking for a 4bt and a manual to modify it in the future

And I get it, you hate Chevys, but brand loyalty isnt a reason to knock a superior powerplant without reason. I'm running a carbureted turd of a 305 right now, and I accept that. Have a 6.0 lq9 from an escalade going in this spring to take care of that. Nothing wrong with cheap, reliable power.

Since you will not use a GM LQ/LS based engine, I would say a reasonably built 4.0, 4.0 based stroker or a cummins 4bt is what you should do. For the amount of money that would be spent building/swapping in a magnum engine you will have a nice stock-looking stronger/more powerful engine.
If you want a 318/360, go buy a grand cherokee.

I was heavy into Pontiac Firebirds awhile ago. The Pontiac big block was a very good platform for major horsepower and could be done with a little ingenuity and not much expense.
So what do I see a lot of at the track? Guys who couldn't find a Camaro and put a put a chuvy into a Firebird. It was so much fun beating those guys.
BTW my very first vehicle was a 58 Fargo Pickup (Canadian) with a Big Block 318. You being a Mopar guy will know exactly what that was and why it was one of the fastest pickups in my little neck of the woods.

Your logic makes no sense, whether it be in a real sense or even a legal sense. Just like when you go buy a lawnmower.. It can have a honda motor on it, and it's made by husqvarna so why dont they just call it a honda? Because its a husqvarna mower powered by honda.

and if they have nothing in common then why is it possible to put Magnum heads on an LA and why can you directly bolt an LA in place of a Magnum (or vise versa) the blocks are not quite identical but very very close...
same timing chain same oil pump ex manifolds swap between them and if you drill and tap the heads you can put an LA intake on a Magnum...
