Default Engine Swap

hope im posting this in the right place, first time doing this. we just got this 4.0 liter straight six from a 78 or 79 cj, we want to put it into my 92 cherokee. how big of a project is it, what changes would we have to make? if anyone has any information that could help it would be most appreciated.

I remember reading a post somewhere else about a CJ engine into an HO XJ.

CJ's had the 4.2L if I remember correctly. You'd be much better off getting another HO motor to swap in stead of the CJ motor. The HO motors are more powerful and more efficient, plus everything is a plug in if you get a '91-'95 XJ motor.

The 4.2 was rated at something like 115 horsepower and the 4.0 was rated at 190 horsepower. So why take a huge step back?

I'd keep the HO block and heads and JUST use the crank arms and pistons from the 4.2. Build a stroker.

You're right, the CJ7s had an I6, but it's not the same I6 that was available for the Cherokee. The CJ7 was 4.2L I6, the XJ had a 4.0L.

The 4.2L engine available in the CJ, like others have said, put out less horsepower than the 4.0L HO in the Cherokee.

Here's a little reading, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMC_Straight-6_engine

I don't think he has a 4 cylinder, I think there's just some confusion about engines here...

I'm new to Cherokee's too, but I'd definitely go with the 4.0 Inline six. I'm used to a V8 and this is my first six. This thing can pull a tree down. It has a deep exhaust tune as well.

i just want to know as simple a question as this is, if you can drop the cj motor in the cherokee, or do you think a rebuild is necessary?

rebuild man. These i6's are seriously bulletproof. They can take a beating for 25 years and still start up every single day.
