not really, i have been wheelin my jeep for 7 years and never hit either. but that is your engine and your tranny so it is up to you, my long arms keep my tranny safe and my fron axle keeps the engine from getting hit so i never got them.
btw those JCR stage 3 cherokee sliders are awsome! been beating on mine for a bit now.

It depends on where and how you wheel. for 98% of wheelers I say they are not needed, but for the 2% they are. If you wheel hard and dont like getting denied, and have the philosphy that everything under your rig is a skid or a ramp then yeah

The group I wheel with most of the time has a fw requirements.. cage, trailered rig, and a few screws loose. In my opinion if you wheel there are a few things that should be done to your rig before you go on the trail... first cage, then lockers, then skid plates. Keep your rig as low as possible, and set your suspension up for 4" up travel and at least 8" or more of down travel. Also fit the biggest tires you can that wont jepordize shaft breakage on full throttle assaults. I wheeled my chop top on 33's for 3 yrs before I broke my chromo's, and I was keeping up with guys on 36/37's

I have the engine skid and I love it. If your running around in brush or who knows what it will deflect a log or rock from taking out the front of your oil pan and what not. Also guards some of your steering components. Its cheap and easy insurance, and let's be honest...who doesn't like more cheap armor?

I built mine out of 1 3/4 dom, and 1/4 plate
It is hard to hit the engine pan, but not so hard to hit the trans. It all depends on where you wheel. Places I wheel lots of big rocks, so lots of chances for other big rocks to be in bad places. Plus you want your bottom of your rig as smooth as possible
