It depends on your skills. Also depends on what cases you plan on running. I am currently running a 231/231 set up in my XJ. I did a true flat skid, and because of this I really had to cut my floor. It also meant doing cable shifters.

ON my truggy I am either doing a 203/300, or a 231/d300. I have both doublers... it is just a matter of picking the one I want which will depend on the gearing I can find used for my axles.

So you can several shifters in your jeep. lol depending how you set it up you can have 2hi, 2low, 4hi, 4low, 4really low, and able to do front digs where only the front gets power. The biggest reason why people do this is a much lower gear ratio for crawling and the ability to do front digs.

I did it for gearing, and control on the rocks. with the 231/231 you cant do front digs, but it does give you an insanely low speed. On the trail I ride around in 2lo 2/3rd gear all day get to the obstacle, pull lever try it in 2lo/4wd, if I cant get traction I slow it on down and up I go.
the 231/231 gives you a double lo of 7.43 in your t-cases
203/d300 gives 5.44 double low
231/d300 gives 7.12, or you can do a 4 to1 in the second case and get 8 to1
231/205, will give you 5.44 but much stronger outputs

Yes you need a slightly modified d300 to do front digs.

More importantly it depends on what trans you have. do you have an ax15, or the ba10, or an automatic?

A few companies make a 231 based doubler. Most ppl run a 231/d300. I am running a 231/231 in my chop top. It is a long setup and requires a lot of fab work. This is not a job for someone who doesnt know his way around fabwork.

D&D machine makes the doubler, as well as Mad rooster

Cnc and fabrication is what I do . I can probly handle it. Would I want to run Toyota t cases if I am gonna use one of there diesels? Or are the jeep ones stronger. I pronounced should have mentioned that earlier. Im a fng when it cones to jeeps.

SO you are asking should you use yota cases or jeep ones.. that would totally depend on what you have on hand and what you can fab.

I have never looked but I dont know if they make any adapters to fit the toy cases to the ax15/aw4. Not saying they dont.. I have just never looked.

I am running a 231/231 set up in my chop top xj, I have about 10 rides on it, no issues yet, not saying there wont be. I didnt upgrade anything in it either. Still running the 1.]1/8 chain and the 3 gear planetery.

If you are worried about strength.. do like I am doing in my truggy. 203 to d300. All gear driven setup, plus there are an infinite amount of upgrades to the d300.

Here is a pic of the 231/231 in place to give you an idea how long it is

Here is a pic of a 231/d300 I was going to run, but ended up going 203/300

DOnt have any pics of the 203/d300 together, but during mock up it was 16.5" long. Also if you run a dodge 203 they are 23 spline, and with the right amount of fab work it can be made to work on the back of a jeep trans.
