I came out of a Hot Rod shop, we did not do Jeeps!
We did do small block and large block motors, from about 300 Cubic Inches (Ford 302) to about 500 Cubic Inches (Caddy 472). All of our engines left with Duals (but no 4X4's). Under 400 Cubic Inches, it was 2.5 inches to the muffler and 2.25 inches back to the rear bumper. Every set up had at least 1 cross over near the end of the transmission between the 2 systems. This lowered the exhaust note, but it also broadened power curve by 250 RPM. My 334 (bored over 327) had 2 cross over pipes. Dyno showed the curve spread by 500 RPM, 300 below the previous and 200 above. I was putting a rear wheel 300 horses to the ground. Went thru the quarter at 100mph.
Im not even going to attempt to suggest putting duals on a 4X4 Jeep, you would be crazy to try. Im am also sure that with today's technology there is less to be gained. What I am saying is a true, dual exhaust, properly sized and installed is worth every penny it costs to install. If you have the room..

I believe there is a split exhaust manifold made by somebody that would fit a Jeep 4.0 but, I have to agree with most of the guys.
1.) Dual exhaust is more to get hung up and/or ripped off while off road. 2.) Dual exhaust does cost way more.
3.) You will get pretty much most awesome sound and performance you will get out of a Jeep 4.0 by doing 2.5" pipe from the catalytic converter back and through a Flow Master Super 40.
I had the muffler shop fab me up a custom tailpipe that exits behind the passenger rear wheel because a 2.5" pipe will not fit between the leaf spring and gas tank without hitting one or the other and causing vibe noise.

Loss of proper back pressure greatly affects the way a 4.0 runs...PERIOD! MPFI, EFI, Carb, it doesn't matter. You can spew all of the techno cheese at me that you want, I know it matters! Four liters like proper back pressure, and you get better torque from a 4.0 with the right amount of back pressure than you will with the same Jeep running WFO exhaust with little to no BP....
Duals, not my cup o tea. If you are doing it for looks, then go for it. It's your Jeep, do want you want to do....not what folks on a board say! If you really wheel your rig, think long and hard about it, because it will cause some clearance issues. FWIW, I know guys that run V8s in their XJs, and they run singles too...
