Swapped my rear drums for discs. Also managed to splice the abs sensors from the ZJ onto mine so I still have a functioning abs system without the idiot light on all the time (which was more work than expected)! But it's all together, and I'll drive it around tomorrow after I bleed the brakes! I'll attach some "finished" photos tomorrow.
Parts used from a '97 ZJ: - backing plates - calipers - left e-brake cable - ABS gears from both axle shafts - ABS sensors (cut at body) - proportioning valve New parts: - rotors and pads - to match the front - caliper bushings, boots, and bolts - Right hand e-brake cable (for a '98 explorer) - axle seals |
Yes, I did this to my Dana 35! If any of you feel this was a bad idea...just keep your comments to yourself please! Thank you :)

Very nice upgrade...glad I did it. It is a great improvement over the drum brakes. In a hard braking situation, I bet the overall stopping distance is significantly shorter!
I added up my expenses and it cost me right about $150. |
sorry for the off topic question but do you know the travel in your shocks? looks like you have shorter shock mounts. also what size tire and lift are you running. im putting on shorter mounts and trying to figure out what to use as far as shock travel.

Nice job!
Did you use the original tone rings or secure new ones? |
Looks like you know exactly what you are doing! Would you happen to know if this conversion works for a D44? How much would you charge me! Lol ;)

Curious where you got your rotors and pads? If you only paid $150 for the entire setup, you must have gotten those for a steal! My drilled and slotted rotors and pads were $150 just by themselves

Do you have any pictures of the ABS sensor where it attaches? Was it a simple splice, strip, solder affair with the original ABS sensor wire?
Also what was involved in getting the GC tone ring off and onto the XJ shaft? Was there any machining involved on the XJ shaft? |
