Detroit Truetrac question
So i'm looking at things that I would like to add to my Jeep within the next two years and one is adding a truetrac to my dana 30. I have 3.54 gearing and I just don't understand why the price goes up significantly for the 3.54 gearing over the 3.73 and up gearing. I'm not looking to spend almost $600 for an LSD that comes under $400 in a higher gearing. What does the gearing have to do with the carrier anyway if you transfer your gear ring over anyway?

I run dual true tracs, great choice IMO. If I had to guess I would imagine it would be a supply and demand kind of thing. Keep an eye on summit.I picked up a pair for a little more than the average price of one.I found the best deals came up when searching just by the diff model and not as Jeep parts

it's called a carrier break. the stock D30 carrier cannot hold a 4.10+ ring because the ring is thicker. so you get a different carrier that can hold the thicker size gear. instead, put the full case in your rear 8.25 which does not have a carrier break (you should swap in an 8.25 rear. ditch the D35). that way you can do gears later.
but as far as full case lockers go, a tru trac might as well be an open diff from what I've seen. really frustrating trying to spot someone over rocks when their front end keeps slipping. go Yukon grizzly or lunch box |
So would you say it's possible to run a truetrac that's for a 3.73+ gearing with a 3.54? Sounds like it's heavier duty which is good but bedsides that I can't see anything that would be an issue.

Truetrac
I have a Truetrac front and rear. It's great in the snow. If you're not crazy rock crawling it's fine. Check out these vids of a Black Cherokee with Truetrac front and rear.

I run truetrac up front with very minimal issues with traction.

From reading I am very confident that I'll be very happy with a truetrac with the type of driving I do but my question is why is there a difference and is there an issue running a 3.54 gearing on the model made for 3.73 and up? I'm not looking to putting money into gearing with just 31s

He wants it in a d30.

I explained the carrier break. something he's not going to be able to avoid. so I suggested the 8.25 as another option. what does it matter if it's front or rear it's just a tru trac

U my friend obviously have never owned a true track.it matters because the front is a steering axle and that's really where a torsen diff shines.I have had front and rear lockers previous to true tracs and for what I do I will never go back.

Basically what Atmos is saying is 100% fact when dealing with the D30 axle. You haven't got any choice on the Tru Trac or any other full case carrier. You HAVE to go with whatever gear ratio you are running now. No option to run one or the other / just have to buy the one that fits your run & pinion (gear ratio). (Period)
Downfall is if you ever plan to run a different ratio down the road, you'll be buying a new full case carrier/locker. That is why he mentioned running a lunch box locker. That'll work with any carrier you run in the D30. You will have to get a new open carrier though if you cross the line whee the break is. Good luck, everyone has different thought of best lockers. I went with Youkon air lockers & decided to regear since they'd all be apart anyways. Once you go into the diff it's expensive unless you go with the lunchbox lockers. |
Atmos a 8.25 is in my future plans but I want to run a lunchbox locker in the rear and that won't be for a while. Maybe I'll just get a lunchbox for the rear and call it done if I can't get the truetrac for the 3.73 price... I suppose the carrier is too thick to hold the thin 3.54 gear ring? I don't wheel hard blue ratings at most
