DANA 44 Gears And Carrier
so recently i had a little incident
https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f67/wh...-pinion-85561/ and my original plan was to build my dana 44 before i put it on but since that happened now i have to put it on right away......right now the gears im running are 3.07 because my jeep is a 5 speed The Dana 44 i got is for a XJ and it has 3.07 gears with a limited slip carrier.... so i was thinking of doing 4.56 gears and a locker but im also not looking to break my pocket either......i would be fine with just doing 4.56 with the same carrier since its already LSD but any opinions on this? thanks! |
going to need carriers for both front and rear to do 456
|
The carrier break for a Dana44 is 3.92 and up. D30 is 3.73 and up.
|
as stated above you "need" a new carrier to go numerically higher the 3.73. you can also get thick gears which will make the numerically higher ratio fit the lower carrier...
USA standard gears THICK Yukon gears THICK these will work allowing you to keep your LSD in the D44. |
yukon has a spool for $100 thats what I did. You will spend $50 bucks for a new carrier, if you dont want to break the bank, and its not your daily driver, thats what I did.

whats the difference between those two?just the price tag. the thick gear makes it so you don't have to buy a carrier and you can keep the LSD(which is just so so IMO. but if you buy a locker or spool then just get a normal(non thick) gear and a 3.92 ^ carrier.
also i have a dana 30 in the front....how would i work with that? as far as making it stronger? there are a lot of upgraded shaft options, trusses and other goodies for the D30. you would also need to get a matching ring and pinion for the front the same ratio as the back... spool? also what type of carrier is it? a spool takes a locker one step further. it is ALWAYS locked and WONT ratchet or slow tires to move when turning or unloaded. its solid. these are good for off road only applications and mostly in the back only unless you have hydraulic assist or full hydraulic steering. they cause a front end to bind when steering, and tires bark when turning. if this isn't a vehicle you drive on the road i would say get a spool for the back. its cheap strong and works well. but if you do i would get an actual locker... there are open carriers (has spider gears) lsd carriers(has spider gears and clutches to help limit movement) lockers with carriers(has a full body and has either clutches only or a helical locking device inside) and a spool (no spider gears, no clutches, no locking device. its solid metal from the ring gear to the shafts... would Google these options and read up on them before spending money. also its not my daily driver so that kinda helps |
USA gears is owned and made by Yukon... same mold castings... same part numbers... USA gears are half the price of most any other gear brand. Randy's ring and pinion seems to get them and sell they at the cheapest prices... even the eBay ones...
a spool replaces your carrier and acts as a locker... make site its a full spool... your rear tires will be forever locked... means barking tires around corners forever and more tire wear... almost like welding your spider gears but better... |
You have what I need
You have got the xj rear diff that I need. I have 1992 chrokee and I am trying to replace the D35 with D44 limited slip 3.07 gears. By the time you make all of those modes you are better off to get a D44 with the right gears. I am not joking but you sound like you need to seel that baby to me.

And I've got two!
One under my rig, the other is sitting on my axle stand waiting for a local buyer with deep pockets.;) |
D44 with 3.07 gears
That's not fair. You have got 2 and most of us don't even have 1. May I ask where are you located?
