Dana. 44 from a cj7?

Would I be able to Bolt this into a Cherokee? It's from an 84 or 87 cj7

ragged1 05-11-2012 09:40 AM

Front or rear?

Rere1992 05-11-2012 09:45 AM

The rear

Rere1992 05-11-2012 09:53 AM

It's an 84 and it's under the axle leafs
I guess I would have to weld spring perches on top.?

ragged1 05-11-2012 10:08 AM

Thats what I'm thinking, plus I'm not sure about the width or bolt pattern.

Gee oh Dee 05-11-2012 10:21 AM

Width I'm sure will be different.

xjmarc 05-11-2012 10:39 PM

It's narrower, different bolt pattern unless it's from an 87 then it's a D35 cause that's a YJ not a CJ.

If its a wide track D44 then you can bolt it in but the bolt pattern is larger than our Xjs. CJ production ended in 86 and was replaced by the Yj Wrangler in 87. And yes, you will have to weld spring perches to the top of the axle due to Cjs having spring under suspension.

I've always thought that the axles were narrow when he got the jeep. It was like a sky scraper and it could flip going around turns. I think I'll wait for the next opportunity or go to the jy and hope for a 87 tow package xj

I've got an 87 two door with a tow package....with an airlocked D44.

Two doors are sexier than fours.

Rere1992 05-12-2012 08:54 PM

You sir have gold that is air locked haha. When I bought my jeep, I couldn't decide between the two. :/. Maybe my next toy will be a 2 door!

Gee oh Dee 05-12-2012 08:58 PM

I wish it had the 242 tcase, tho. That'd be uber rare.

Whys that? I got a D44 with an AMC242 case.

Gee oh Dee 05-12-2012 09:10 PM

I would have had the non disco front axle then, from the factory in 1987, with a D44 rear...

Not too many of those around.

Lmao. My Jeep is an 85, was stolen, stripped, rebuilt and retitled as an 87 cause that's what the donor was. I got a D44 rear, non disco D30 and AMC242. So maybe that "rare" one was my donor?

Gee oh Dee 05-12-2012 09:24 PM

Yeah, could be.

Sad.

Rere1992 05-12-2012 10:11 PM

So I should look for a tow package 87 xj that has a 242

Gee oh Dee 05-12-2012 10:13 PM

It doesnt have to have the 242.

Rere1992 05-12-2012 10:30 PM

Do they come with d44s in the front?

Gee oh Dee 05-12-2012 10:31 PM

Not the Cherokees. They were all D30s.

Rere1992 05-12-2012 10:33 PM

Aaaaah I was under the impression it was d44 front and rear :x. What would be a good axle to swap into the front? 79 f250 hp d44?

Gee oh Dee 05-12-2012 10:35 PM

Depends on what rear you get.

That one would be full width.

Rere1992 05-12-2012 10:36 PM

I thought so. I like the width of the stock Cherokee axles. Are waggy axles worth the swap in?

Gee oh Dee 05-12-2012 10:37 PM

Yeah, i think those are the D44 width ones you want.

Rere1992 05-12-2012 10:38 PM

Ok, I'll probably troll around the forum and read up. Thanks for the help

Gee oh Dee 05-12-2012 10:40 PM

Np.
