You will not like result if you install 3.55 ring and pinion in place of the current 3.73.
Yes it will fit in your axle, but you'll need to regear the front axle to match the rear.
Why are you considering this swap?

dont down grade , keep the 373. if u run 355 ur rig will be more slugish then it already is . and u'll have to regear the front like^^FRANKZ , said. also if u run a locker , u better kiss ur d35 good bye . i used to have a d35 and locked it , with 355 broke it the first wheeling trip after i locked it . they call it TURDY FIVE for a reason lol

You need to provide a little more information.
Tranny?
Engine?
Tire size?
Upgrading a D35 is risky proposition at best. You'll be ahead of the game if you replace it with a 29 spline 8.25" axle.

if you are asking about wanting to swap in a 3.55 rear end you cant unless you swap out the front as well.
if you are asking if LS or posi carrier from a 35 that had 3.55s will fit your 3.73 ring gear, yes that carrier will work.
i dont see anything wrong with locking a 35 if you are getting free carrier, lockers, spare shafts, etc.
wheel whats affordable.
but id never put a dime into a 35.
just be aware you are on borrowed time if you run 35"+ tires and fully lock the 35.
if youre on a LS with 33s and under youll fine. carry spare shafts .
my buddy wheeled the con all the time into buck and back on his LS d35 on 33s. never broke once.
just take it easy on the sknny pedal or swap in more beef
