Default Dana 30 locker help

So I have the np242 under my jeep and being in the western pa area full time is very important to me, thus selectable lockers are the only way to go. I'm interested in this locker here: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/dtl-162sl60a but it doesn't say how it works or anything. Any one have any experience or knowledge of this locker? Also with carrier lockers do I need to set the gearing again or can I just torque the gear ring to spec and put it in? Thanks for the help as I am open to options but don't want to pay around $1000 just for a locker.

Youll have to do the whole gearing mumbo jumbo. Thats a full carrier auto locker, selectable lockers are driven by a cable, electronics, or air.

I personally would run an eaton e-locker, its an open diff/spool type, and seems to be the only electronically actuated locker worth anything. Other options for selectables are ARB, OX, Auburn ECTED, and im sure there are others but I cant think of them. Eaton's e-locker seems the best bang for buck one out there.

If you're looking for a full case selectable locker that can be shut off 100% or turned on 100% all you have for choices is Air: ARB or Yukon Zip, E-Lockers, OX lockers an possibly a few others.

I live in Buffalo NY & wanted Fully Selectable since my wife drives my XJ at times in the snow & she couldn't handle it with auto lockers. I went with Yukon Zip Air locker in my 30 & ABR in my 8.25. Check out RWK Haus (Vendor in here) or Serious Off Road. Both great to deal with.

You'll need to reset up your R&P as the case will be new/different. If you ever planned on regearing, this is the time as there is a break in the carriers for the 30.

It isn't clear to me why you can't use full time with locker on a np242. You still have the differential in the transfer case to prevent stresses from building up between the front and rear axle. You would still have to deal with the handling consequences of having the front locked.

If you lock the rear you would have a lot less need to use full time anyway.

I hardly know what snow is but from reading many threads it seems that limited-slip is preferable over lockers for daily snow driving as they are more predicable and driver-friendly. Detroit Truetrac is mentioned frequently.

Yes, but since I have 3:55 gearing, the Detroit locker I posted is actually cheaper so i was thinking for how much you'd spend on an lsd why not get a full locker? Anyone know anything about the locker I posted? I can't tell how it works as far as locking and unlocking goes.

Not to be the obvious one but have you tried googling the lockers I.d. number? Maybe google 'how does a full case Detroit locker work' ? Heck the description on that page tells enough to know how it works

Sorry, I was on my phone at the time. I have looked it up, looks to be a more advance lunchbox locker. I'm not looking at the Truetrac

I never took that to account when I locked my 30 this past spring
Good thing I live in the great state of Texas where it's 80 degrees in the winter and if we do get snow it melts by 5pm lol

Don't want to spend +$1k on a locker, I'm on a college budget. I think I'm going to go with the truetrac as I do mostly dirt trails with some rock trails.

A TruTrac isn't a locker. If you drive in snow a lot the TruTrac does pretty good, but it still is a limited slip deferential and doesn't handle rocks worth a dam. My favorite form of wheeling is snow wheeling, and the best way to go for snow is a selectable locker, open when you need deferential between the front tires and locked when you want the traction.
