I haven't even thought about price yet since I still need to buy all the parts and build the D44 before I can sell the 8.25

Earlier in the thread I mentioned I wanted a Truetrac rear... Well my wife just told me she wants a selectable in the D44! Let me tell you, she drove a hard bargain.

I guess I'm with you, Satirical!

I'm a fan of the ox locker manual cable. Spent a day riding passenger in a buddy's built TJ with front and rears and really liked the simple design with no worry of some bs electrical/air issues.

I get the have it but not need it. It all falls back to the intended use of your jeep and your comfort level. I for one am not comfortable trying to clear an obstacle at all cost. My XJ isn't built for that. If I'm not confident that I can make it I'll go around it.

Personally I plan to go with the air actuator since I already have air set up, and it's easier to find somewhere to put a switch mounted cleanly than the lever. The main benefit I see to OX is the fork style shifter and the fact that if the actuator should fail for some reason you can screw in the lock out tool and still wheel. My roommate's dad has an old ultra 4 buggy that he borrowed for a trip and the seal failed on one of the ARBs so he was without a locker for the rest of the trip

I too have a D44 waiting to be assembled

It was under a Jeep for about 10yrs, then dismantled down to the last piece by its mechanic owner

It has an ARB air lock centre, and a full rebuild kit, 4.10 gears, and I have 3.55 to match my fronts

I have a hard time working out where it came from, it looks factory XJ, has a date stamp on the spring perch of 8/99

The PO told me he thought that it may have been imported to Australia from USA

I got as far as honing the used bearings to use as setup bearings.

The guy sold all his XJ gear quite cheap, I got the full D44, ARB centre, compressor, switches, disc conversion etc for $150

As I was not flush with cash, I (unfortunately) passed on a electric OX locked D30 for $800

Man these D44s must all be sitting in peoples garages waiting to be put in something. No wonder it's so hard to find them

On this same topic, I've been re-watching NickInTimeFilms' Dana 44 videos:

The last one, the Jana K4 kit, is really cool to me. I'm planning on using it on both of my D44s.

I hadn't seen the Jana K4 kit. I'll need to look into that some. I had seen his disc brake video, but the ford 8.8 backing plates are a much better candidate for a disc brake conversion. The bolt pattern is almost identical.

Check the tag against a Mopar parts catalog.

Learned that the D44 in my XJ came out of an 87’ Cherokee.

I remember before just buying a 8.25 I was waiting for a good d44 deal of maybe the unicorn MJ AMC20. That AMC 20 would be such a cool axle to build.

Lol. You AW4 people have it nice. Both my rear Aussie and Spartan were borderline miserable on the street with an AX15. The only time they weren't was when I would say "screw it" and gave it a bootful of throttle. You can't be miserable when you're sideways.
