Custom jeep width axles
I wanna put stonger axles under my jeep like a 44 or a 60. I have sources to get custom axles shafts made. would I be able to take a 44 or 60 housing and cut them down to jeep width. my jeep is still a dd and can't have ridiculously wide flares. I've never seen it done but it seems possible. Any thoughts?

Chopping the long side tube and slugging it a little shorter wouldn't be the end of the world. A proper re-tube is not fun or easy.
Best way to go is just to run H2 rims or custom rims with 5.5" back space. Anyway, 90% of the guys who start these threads never follow through because they either can't do it, or realize a $3500 pair of axles under a daily driver just isn't feasible.
Go do some research. Everything you could ever want to know about axle swaps is already online somewhere.

Also there are D44 axles that are pretty close to stock width, half ton axles that are only 4.5" wider than stock (9", 8.8, ford 44). Tons of options. Check out some build threads on naxja and pirate. Keep clicking that google search

Has it been done.. yes many times
Is it worth it when upgrading axles... I don't think so personally, reasons being... time spent modifying housings, cost of custom shafts, when you break out in the middle of no where you can't get replacements at any old junk yard..
And besides.. full width xj's look cool!

Cab and chassis 14b and narrow a front 60. Then you only have to have one short side shaft made. Run a h2 wheel or factory ford wheel and it wont be much wider than stock.

yeah extremely cheap shafts aint gonna do you any good. you could even have a stock shaft shortened and resplined. plan on at least a $4000 (if you do all the work yourself) budget for this build. and that's not including frame plates, cage, tires, or rims. it's a huge commitment. custom shafts should be the least of your worries

Could always try and get a set of JK Rubicon 44s... Have selectable lockers, usually 4.10a.. Little bit wider but only a few inches. Occasionally see them on EBay... See them on JK-forum.com quite frequently... Truss em, put new mounts on and your good to go. Usually go for a lot cheaper than you can build on. Check out the classifieds on Pirate... They usually have a ton of axles for sale. Keep in mind anything cut to fit a TJ will fit yours.

Also worth mentioning some XJs came with 44s in the rear. Some MJs too (requires a tiny bit of work). 8.8 are cheap and some will fit without a lot of work. Rear is easy... Front is much harder. TJ Rubicon 44 front will bolt right up but its a sorry 44
