I did this in my '96 XJ. So far they seem to work really well. There is a write up on this forum under the Technical write-ups section. (XJ section) Pre- 97 Cupholder solution. You can get all the specs on the holders (website where to buy) and follow his write up.

This is he best idea I've seen, I plan on removing the plastic shallow cup holder on mine and doing this.

what about swapping in a console from the later XJs? I'm relatively new to the forum with a 96 2 door Cherokee but I have been looking through a lot of the information available here------a bit over loaded right now. somewhere I ran into a reference that it can be done but that you have to somehow or other bend the e-brake lever over a couple inches. I'm looking for those threads.

mine may seem a little cheesy but they work extremely well. I took some PVC to keep things were they belong. Plus I can remove the PVC and a coffee cup sits in it nice stable. Cost about $8

I watched the video. I guess I'll run back to the pick-n pull and get the e-brake handle; later today. It makes more sense than trying to bend one. I also need to find the rubber strip that surrounds the e-brake handle. I need to take a day or two to clean and paint the console tan anyway.
Adding the link is not a problem but selecting and fitting the material could be done a little better. It probably works fine the way he did it but a better fit would be better. my 96 has enough rattles already to search out and quiet down without adding more. probably some HDP/nylon washers might tighten things up without binding them. also some sort of rubber boot between the shifter base and the the floor pan with just a tight pass-through slot for the cable might be advantageous in cold weather.

Steve, I was thinking neoprene foam like old wet suit material. went back got the handles and the bracket riser---may or may not need that. also found a different scrapped jeep that had a nice stowage compartment lit with working latch and solid hinge along with a nice clean bucket with the CD holding ribs. the JC 62mm throttle body arrived yesterday and those remfg injectors arrived today. Going out in a bit to finish cutting the top out of the cowl, and figure out where to insert the hole saw for the 3" hole.
I'll start with the spectre chromed plastic elbows initially in the interests of time and later look into the silicone ones probably use the Spectre red silicone butt-to-butt clamp on connectors for starters too just to keep the system from being too rigid and allow wiggle room for some engine vibration
