Default Crazy, but possibly brilliant idea for cutting rear fenders?

Alright ya'll I had a moment of drunken redneck genius last night. A while back I trimmed past the pinch weld on my rear fenders like a dingus. leaving open space all the way around between the outer and inner sheets of metal. And now I've got an idea.

Kinda hard to explain over the web but...

I'm thinking I can trim ONLY the inner fender metal, leave the outside panel in tact, creating an obvious gap where the inner fender would trimmed up more than the outside sheet of metal. And THEN I could cut and fold the OUTER metal inward and up, therefore covering the gap, as well as giving me more clearence.

The only thing I'm worried about is the bottom parts on the left and right side of the wheel since it makes kind of a little box down there. I'm gonna draw on it with a sharpie and see what I can come up with.

so you're talking about cutting the inner wheel well practically flush, then bending the outside metal inward to fill the gap. I don't see this working exactly they way you've got it in your head, but I'm interested to see pictures of what you come up with

I like the gap in the seams. Helps the water pour out when it gets sunk. LOL

I've got some Notch Custom XJ-Max flares I'm waiting to put on until someone in my local jeep club with some welding skillz can help out. Those call for cutting the outter fender shorter, then folding the inner fender out to meet them, then welding the tabs from the inner to the outter. Kind of the opposite of what has been done in this thread.

That's kind of beside the point, right now, I'm just wondering if I might be able to get away with pop rivets instead of welding . . . if so, I might be able to make it out wheeling with the club this weekend.

Aww, shoot. Nope. Don't think that'll work. Won't be any material to rivet through when I fold the inner tabs to meet the outter fender. . .

Shee-oot.
