Default Convert Speedo to Electric?

I have a 1990 XJ. It has a speedo cable. The cable started chattering. Has anyone converted one of these to a VSS with later speedo? I don't want to go aftermarket. Hoping I can swap to a later speedo with sensor and associated wiring. Has this been done? Figure it's possible?

AW4 with a 231. Both original to the jeep.

The ECM provides 8V of power to the VSS on the HO models and the output feeds both the TCM and the gauge. How the gauge will react with 12V-14V input, you'll have to test... You could certainly install a buck step-down converter to get 8V, and then it should work fine.

The fuel gauge will read backwards, empty when it's full, but that can be fixed by changing the sensor in the tank. Don't know about the coolant temp and oil pressure senders, but those are easy enough to replace...

I was thinking swap just the speedo gauge out in the cluster with a later one.

If only it was that simple, where is the later speedo going to get the signal from at that point?

how would you guess the cable from your tcase now tells the electric speedo to do the thing?

Not exactly a pluck and place factory deal as a singular mod. At the very least your going to need a complete donor 92+ xj

I'm sorry, I did not articulate that very well. I meant swap just the speedo gauge in the cluster to alleviate swapping all of the other gauge sender units (rather than swapping the whole cluster). I understand that I will also need a VSS and wire between gauge and VSS.

The whole reason I want to swap the speedo out is because the cable started to chatter. I'm also considering some mud terrains and a flow master exhaust to just drown the noise out. Or maybe a radio.
