control arm question
at what height in a lift do you need to start worrying about new control arms? and how much longer should they be? for example on a 4.5" lift?

4.5" in my opinion is right on the border line.. with a 4.5" you could get a short arm lift. You could technially be like me and have a 6" with a short arm just the ride is extremely rough.
I don't know what there called or what the technical term is but you could keep the short arms (cuz its cheaper) and get the control arms that are the same length as your stock ones that have a bend in them and are adjustable (i think) and i think they take away the intense angles and can help with the ride..
i have looked into doing a conversion to a Long arm.. just don't wanna spend the $$

If you have the adjustable arms already and don't want to spend the money on a long arm upgrade, RE used to make control arm drop brackets that correct those angles. I've had for 4 years on 5.5" lift, works great

stock stamped steel control arms should be replaced with tubular arms above a 2 inch budget boost.
stock uppers should be replaced above a 3.5 inch lift.
if not using drop brackets, short arms should be replaced with long arms above 5.5 inches.
yeah, you'll get some that say they have 6 inches plus with short arms, but i know for a fact their ride is no better than a lumberwagon.
you can go with long arms at 4.5 inches and up.

Went wheelin last week, and my buddy with 4" lift and 35s on a TJ. He had stock control arms all around and going up a small hill with some skinny pedal, snapped both uppers. If ur wheelin replace the arms when u lift

I agree with all. I'm at 5" lift on stock control arms. Rides like crap when you hit a bump. Have an adj. track bar with drop brackect, parallel to drag link, all new TRE's and tie rod upgrade too. On the highway, rides fine. I posted a pic on the forum of the droop angle. Yikes. I'm going to try the drop bracket first, then adjustable arms. I haven't wheele it yet due to it riding so rough on the street. Have to fix that first IMO.
