Default Comp cams 68-232-4 poor mileage

so just over a year ago I installed a comp cams 68-232-4 in my engine when i rebuilt it, that engine went in a 1999 jeep cherokee on 31's with all the usual power upgrades(60mm throttlebody, CAI, header, 2.5 exhaust, 99+ intake), and since then i've consistently been getting 11.5-12 mpg, and ive had enough. this is not a sensor issue.

does anyone else out there have this cam in there and have report of the mileage it gets?

with all this said i am looking to swap the cam out for one that will get better mileage, but keep aproximately the same power boost that the comp cam gave me. so anybody out the have any reccommendations from any of the other companies that may yield better mileage (dont say stock, im obviously aware thats the best) so far i have been looking into Lunati 63500, 505 Performance stage 1, and one of the cliffords.

would really just like some mileage back.

Maybe before you change out the cam do some research on fuel injector upgrades. This forum seems to be convinced that Dodge neon or Jeep Liberty injectors are a good upgrade that may improve mileage- and would be cheaper than changing out a cam.

I have the comp cam 232, but I never thought about it for gas millage. I would think any aftermarket cam (upgrade) is gonna have a larger lift... (leaving valve open longer) If there is a cam that gives more power and helps gas millage, please share. I would be interested in that! Gas at 4 bucks a gallon SUCKS!!!

I understand that any aftermarket cam will be worse in fuel than stock, just 11mpg seems a tad steep for what the cam does :/

Performance mods help you loose gas millage... I know that companys are telling you now days that cold air intakes, open exhaust, upgraded ignition systems, cams, ext help improve millage. But when you think about it your helping your engine breath more. And the one thing they never mention anymore is how much easier these mods make the skinny pedal go to the floor. Not saying you cant do this stuff and gain, its just your driving habits need to change also.
Larger tires are adding to your rotating mass. I know there only 31s. But thats "x" amout of more weight to turn (depending on what kind of tires you have. 31 inch thornbirds are gonna be worse that bfg's)

I recomend installing a vacuum guage. That way you can see how often you are heavy on the pedal.
