Cleaning a pulled head
I recently pulled the cylinder head, in order to replace the valve stem seals and replace all other upper motor gaskets. This motor has 250k miles on her, so everything is pretty well caked on. Here are some pics. What's the best way to clean her up, if I should clean at all??
Also looks like a may need some new valve stems if these cant be cleaned.

If you want it cleaned right take it to a head shop and get it hot tanked, not too expensive for just a clean job. Real simple just drop off and pick up throw a quick paint job on and be done. This will get all the internals ports and such.
If you just want it pretty and don't care about all the internals then get a tub and soak it with some simple green solution and lots of elbow grease with wire brushes.

Having the head cleaned with the Hot tank idea, seems to be the way to go. Any ideas on cleaning the tips of the cylinders? Wire brush and simple green?

^^^ yeah, the plan is to have the head and valves placed in a hot tank. The motor ran really well before I pulled it apart, so I think is the best option.

So I took the head in to get hot tanked and the machinist advised that I get the head refinished. He said with out refinishing the head, it will leak when installed with a new gasket. I'm not sure that I'm buying this, what do you guys think. The head and gasket did not leak before removal??

My understanding is that they should look for any warpage, even if minimal then it should be refinished.
However this is not needed in all cases (Refinishing)
