Default Chrysler 8.25 27 to 29 spline

Can I simply replace my 27 splines with 29's? Or is there more to it than that?

Thanks in advance guys....

its easier to find a 29 spline axle and just swap the whole thing. you need the spiders, shafts, and i believe a seal or bearing somewhere. i looked into it years ago when i still had one and ended up building a 44 instead.

Thanks guys.. I was afraid of that... and just to be clear, the 27 is not nearly as good as the 29?... I am on a Rubicon Express 5.5 long arm, running 33's and planning on a rear auto-locker... is 27 good for light-to-medium off road work?

It's only marginally better than a Dana35 due to the larger tubes.

i was pretty hard on my 27sp 8.25 with 33s locked. i would go ahead run it. the housing makes the axle a fair amount stronger than the D35 IMO and experience.

If someone was going to do a locker and aftermarket shafts w/ 29 spline does it matter which housing they start with?

It depends on what locker you plan on going with, a lunch box type locker will require you to replace the carrier, but if you plan on going with a full case locker it will make no difference which you start with a 27 spline or and 29 spline.

I planned on swapping gears to 4.88s and I like Detroit Lockers so I just upgraded my 27 spline axle with gears and 1541H 29 spline shafts and the Detroit.

so one last question then guys... if I didn't want to do a major swap out on my 27 spline complete axle, what about just upgrading to heavy duty 27 spline shafts? (obviously like was said above, with all the appropriate parts).... hope this isn't redundant... still learning here....

You spelt "Considerably" wrong.

29 spline is almost the strength of a Dana 44.
