I used to have a 148GTL, they are great little radios, would might want to consider 'unclipping' it if you ever want to work side band, I have literally talked all over the world on my old 148gtl and a small amp. The big issue with running the 148gtl that hot is the final is a 2sc1969 transistor, and they are rated at about 18 watts if I recall correctly. Meaning either your radio has an upgraded final, or the stock final is really working hard

Play around with Side band, 38 LSB is a good place to start

yeah if you want some nice clean power consider this buying an amp, it's just as illegal to use an amp as it is to mod a CB and pust out more power

for under $70 you can get the RM Italy KL-203p (100-175 watts) and for around $140 (or less) you can get the KL-503 which does twince the power out of the 203p...

Amps are illegal and a poor excuse for a good antenna. What the hell do you need range for on a cb.

If you're being sarcastic then I completely missed it and I apologize.

If not, are you an idiot? lol
I'm a manager at a truck stop, you would be hard pressed to talk with a trucker who doesn't get his/her CB tweaked, commonly known as a peak and tune. Peaking refers to getting more power and tuning refers to, well, fine tuning (frequency). All CBs in America are limited to 4 watts of transmission power by the FCC. More power obviously refers to more range, as well as volume and clarity. Range is a huge benefit when you're out on the road and talking about road conditions or closings, listening for weather updates or even catching smokey reports.

If my understanding is correct, an amp (AKA linear? I think) is an easy and safe way to up the power without tearing into the CB itself. Since the popularity of CBs has declined since the 70s and 80s, it is harder and harder to find a trustworthy shop to tweak your CB. Going the amp route is just easier and in some cases safer.

How you figure it is an excuse for a bad antenna is beyond me. A CB with an amp will perform poorly with a bad antenna and be in worse shape than without it. A stock CB on a bad antenna will lose range and clarity and "risk" harming the CB, mainly if the SWR is high. The higher the SWR, the more risk the CB is in. Combine a bad SWR with amplified power and you will fry the CB!

Yes, they are illegal, as is the aforementioned tweaking, but you're about as likely to get a citation for that as you are driving one MPH over the limit on the interstate.

Again, if you were being sarcastic I totally missed it and I apologize.

Also a good point. Channel 9 is used for emergency situations. "If help is ten miles away I guess they just won't hear me, oh well." Or I could opt for more range!

Plus, let's all be serious for a second. If I'm in a zombie apocalypse I want good range to find help and team up with other survivors.

Yes they are. I ran one when I did CB and I had a great antenna setup. Now as a Ham I don't run one even though I can legally do so on the Ham bands

Just because you can talk farther, doesn't mean you can hear farther. I'd look more to a import transceiver, than a linear amp.

If you want to use your CB only when you ride with your friends and they are close to you (forest trails or when you in a column of cars)it is not so important to buy an expensive antenna or too tall antenna. But you have to ground it anyway.Because without grounding you will never get a true standing wave ratio.Usually i see that americans use other types of antennas and CB stations.I use MEGAJET MJ-400 and a SIRIO 4000 antenna which is mounted right in the center of cherokee`s roof.Standing wave ratio is around 1.1 by testing with standing wave ratio device called SWR meter. And sorry again for my skill,i do not use any translators

Again...cb amps are illegal. If you understand about proper HF frequency charactertics you'll know that 11 meters (the orig. ham radio band it was) you'll know that it is basically useless.

BTW my cell phone with a LEGAL amplifier from Maximum Signal has most all parts of the US covered. Why waste time with a cb for emergency when you can call directly AND tweet msgs, have a video chat and watch Youtube while you wait for help.

It is the 21st century folks, we should be embracing the technology. The true professional truck drivers don't even bother much with cb anymore.

Unless your cell phone is a SAT phone, I am gonna have to disagree. You WILL NOT get reception in the Sierra nevada's, or pretty much any other mountain range I can think of. And yes truckers do still continue to use CB's. I use mine to talk to truckers on the road, and friends when I'm wheelin. And the PA is for anyone I decide to talk to on the street.
