So here goes the first post coming from a long time lurker.
I have had a few jeeps over the years and just bought my most recent XJ, a one owner 1991 4x4 4.0l with 262000kms. Now to make room my old ZJ (small V8 98 auto) has gotta go to the scrapper.
So my plan is to pull the front buckets and rear bench as the original driver's seat in the XJ has developed a bit of a lean, and I'm a bit OCD so I want it all to match.
(I know the rear seats will need a bit of cutting and "massaging")
Also I just put new front calipers on (1500ishkm) so I figured i might as well pull those for spares.
The rear disc swap doesn't hold a lot of appeal for me so I don't think I'll pull the parts and I don't have much space so I wont be pulling the axles for spare parts.
Long story short I thought I would ask you gurus and jeepers what else should be on my shopping list.
What lug nuts are on the wheels of the '98? Might be better then the ones you have. Does the '98 have a full size spare? With a cover? If so I would grab them cause I am thinking you have a space saver spare in the '91. Also I am under the impression that the rod for the spare, that secures it, is shorter when you have a space saver one. I would take all that including the base the tire sits on too. Do you have an overhead console in there? I would grab that too but thinking putting a '98 Grand Cherokee overhead in a '91 XJ would require some real work. Plus my understanding is that not all features would be functional. If you do grab the bracket, visors too plus any wiring. Might want to consider some of the engine peripherals. Starter, alternator, battery, etc. Not sure if any of this would fit though. I find the best way to do this is at the Napa website. Put one of the vehicles in and look for the part. Pick one of the listings. Towards the bottom you will see the words Buyer's Guide. Click on that. It will tell you every vehicle that this part will work in. I looked up an alternator for your '91 and it appears that the alternator in the '98 is the same.
I should have thought of the full size spare, that's getting pulled for sure. Great advice on the NAPA buyer's guild I'll definitely utilize that in the future.
I had forgot to mention that I am already keeping the jeep wheels, but i hadn't thought of the lug nuts. They are the closed end style and your right that is much better.
Unfortunately I posted the ZJ on my local classifieds for a part out and got zero interest so I'm not gonna sit of the rear disc stuff until it picks up. I do really wish there was some interest though cause I'm sending a lot of good parts to the JY.
As far as the tie rod's are concerned I had a pretty nasty wobble when I would hit bumps at highways speeds (100-130kph) so I'm leaving all that in the old girl cause it's all a little suspect.
Great ideas folks, you've given me much more to think about. Thanks!

One thing I just remembered on the spare. Check the size. Might be different. Thinking stock a '98 GC is a 235 75 15 while a '91 stock might be a 225 75 15. But the wheels themselves should be 15 with a 4.5 bolt pattern. Probably 8" in width while the '91 is probably 7" but that should be OK. I work at a Napa and we had a '95 Grand Cherokee Limited for a delivery vehicle. When it died the owner was just going to junk it and said I could have whatever I wanted. I just grabbed a couple things. It had wheel locks and we had the key so I grabbed that. It had a full size spare cover so I grabbed that with the base and the rod I mentioned before. Don't forget the black plastic half circle with the wing nut too. Just thought of that.
So I'm pulling parts as we speak. I had to wait for a warmer day (high of -5c) and the full size spare parts were the first to get pulled. I'm kinda just working from the back to the front and the rear seats are a little worse for wear than I remember so I'm gonna pass on those.
I'm just wondering if anyone knows off the top of there head if the visors fit? Just on instinct I'm gonna say "no" but I'm sure the wifey would mind having a mirror again.
I just finished up all I'm going to do for the night and have got plenty to show for it.
Driving home it was pretty obvious that the visors won't work but that's no big deal, if it wasn't such a hike from where I am storing the ZJ to where I had to park my XJ I would have just checked.
All I have left on my pick list is:
-Calipers
-Alternator
-Overhead "console"
And maybe so misc. fuses and ****. I think I'm also going to chop out the cup holders and see about making use of them in the XJ, maybe for the rear seats.
