Can you take the white piece off? Its from the shifter trim piece thats on center console

Im gonna paint these trim pieces and could just tape areas off but taking them off insures they look perfect

Tried taking the same white plastic parts of my 91, ended up breaking the plastic tabs holding the two pieces together. i would say just tape them
