Default New Gears for Dana 44 Rear Axle - Is this the way to go?

So, I'm hunting for some 4.10 gears for my Dana 44 rear axle. I'm checking all the site sponsors looking for the best deal but so far it seems like this is the kit to go with...

http://www.justdifferentials.com/D44...411bp-t-ng.htm

Now, I'm going to shop around with all the sponsors first and see who can get me the best deal on that, but what do you guys think? Instead of just upgrading the gears to 4.10 it seems like I might as well spend the extra money and upgrade to the big pinion kit to improve the axle and make it 'beefier' so to speak.

Do I have any other options or is Nitro the only company that makes a kit like this? Also, I'd be interested to know if anyone here is running this and what they think about it.

It seems like a nice setup and I don't have any reservations about it, just thought I would ask first to see what other people think.

Thanks in advance!

Rustys Off Road has complete gear set packages ft and rear including a vg Master Install kit for each, he has Motive gears in most packages but has all others. I have used Motive in racing apps for a long time drag racing up to 1200+HP using a transbrake no problems so I trust them. I paid about $430 for the complete package D30HP/Chy 8.25 29 spline installed 2 Detroit Lockers when gears (4.56's) were installed.

500 bucks for a set of gears is crazy. Every set of gears I've ever broken was with the ring gear, pinion has never been an issue. I only run Yukon these days because they are quiet and the warranty is good and easy if you have problems. Look on forum and such and you'll find 4.10s are plentiful because no one wants gears that high unless they are running 31s. I'm sure you could find a decent used set off a TJ Rubi or something for 50 bucks or less.

Okay so in other words upgrading to a big pinion is pretty much a waste of my money, yes? I guess that's what I was really curious about was weather or not the big pinion upgrade was worth it.

With 4.56 gears on 31" tires highway traveling likely won't be much fun since my motor will probably be buzzing at around 3k rpm.

I wouldn't do that. I also wouldn't regear just for 31's. What is your set up now?

4.5" RE short arm lift with 31" Cooper STT tires.

I need to regear and it's apparent because after going to 31" tires my low end off the line sucks and my AW4 tranny is constantly hunting for gears when I go up hills. It's like a constant hunt between 3rd and 4th gear and it's super annoying.

Before regearing you should finalize your tire size.
My path I knew I wanted 33's now and 35/36's later no bigger... So I went with 4.56's.

With 4.10's on 31's you will like it and you can even run up to a 33.
But that's it, if you even think of putting 35's on it you'll be searching for cash to regear it again.

Next up, Carriers... When you regear decide if you want Front or Rear Lockers. Do it once do it Right.

Next up Shafts... So now your going to replace your carrier good time to think about shaft size.
Upgrade the D30 to 30 spline or the D44 to 33 / 35 spline. (Good Options for 35+ Tires)

My advice save the regear money until you really need it, 33+ size Tires.

As for the AW-4, 2 MUCH CHEAPER OPTIONS:
Drop it in 3rd gear before a big pull - FREE
Give the 4.0L some more power: intake, exhaust, injectors - $250

Oh and before you buy a D44 Ring Gear consider this...

Agreed.

How come my 88 with 31s at 5000 foot elevation runs real strong and doesn't hunt? Few minor engine mods but nothing serious. Exhaust and intake and such.

OP, have you ever tuned up your 4.0? Adjusted your TV cable? Eliminated the dreaded crush in the exhaust pipe? Added a bored throttle body? Is your catalytic converter clogged?

I have a full catback exhaust (brand new as of last month), brand new cats, ceramic coated banks header, 62mm throttle body, intake, injectors, and that's about it. Brand new plugs and O2 sensors as well.

The only time my Jeep hunts for gears is going up hills. It will downshift to 3rd then shift to 4th and the cycle continues over and over, especially when using cruise control. On flat ground and highway it's mostly okay though. I've got plenty of power, it just seems lacking power off the line but that seems to be the larger tires causing that I would assume.

Let's not avoid the obvious though. 31" tires will make you lose some down low power and that's just what I noticed. Going from 29" to 31" I noticed it's not as quick off the line so I know that re-gearing it will help me get some of that power back. And now is the time to do it if any since I've got a spare set of axles including a Dana 44 sitting here in my garage.
