I also thought that it was very strange for both hoses and caliper to fail at the same time, which pointed to the master. I guess that it could have been coincidence.

I'm not sure what the metering valve is. I took the booster off with the master and the proportioning value.
But now that i think about it. I ended up using the old valve from my '91. The one from the junk yard had a cross threaded port and wouldn't hold fluid.
I'm wondering if the adjust rod coming out of the booster is not allowing the master to fully retract which is keeping the fluid from returning.

I recently did a brake power booster upgrade to my '91 XJ. I pulled one from the junk yard from a '97. Yesterday and today after driving, the pedal gradually started to not go down as far and got to the point where I barely had to touch it to stop. The rotors were very hot on both front wheels and I'm not sure what the smell was but it was definitely coming from the area around the pads. Most likely the pads from not being released? I searched the forums but nothing really fits.
At first I was thinking the caliper, because the driver side was squeeking like it wasn't retracking all of the way but now since both sides are hot, I'm not sure.
Plenty of brake fluid too.
Any ideas?
Thanks guys.

Just found this: http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/brake05.pdf
It's for a Lexus training, but I think the principles are still the same.
As soon as the sun comes up, I'm going to check out adjusting the rod.

To late. I adjusted the rod back some and so far everything is working like it should be. The adjustment on that link for the Lexus is not the same as on the Cherokee. I might back it off a little more. Based on the Lexus site, I'm wondering if the master doesn't go on by hand almost all the way the rod needs adusting. Otherwise the rod is pushing the master from the get go and when fully installed will not allow it to retract fully.
Just a little warning about the calipers from Autozone. They look the same but I put one of them on and there was a lot of play in it. I started to back the cherokee out of the drive and it was obvious that it wasn't right. It sounded like the caliper wasn't able to keep a constant contact with the pads to the rotor. Like the pads were knocking back and forth. Maybe I didn't give them a chance to adjust. I took it off and thankfully they gave me full credit for it.
I'm going to keep a tight watch on it and let you know.
Thank you for your help.

I remember you asking. That was one of the reasons I decided to do it. I still had to push it in some using a wrench. That's why I'm thinking about backing it up some more. The rod's almost to the end though.
It's still driving good around town, but tomorrow will be the test when I drive it to work.
