biggest allowable tire size with stock axles?
So I am looking to put an 8" iron rock long arm kit on my xj..problem is, I want to put 37's on there. I am pretty sure that I would have to upgrade my whole axles for that though. Would I be able just to replace the axleshafts instead of the whole axlex? I would obviously also do the gearing to like 4:56 or 4:88. My xj is 2000, so it has 8.25 chrystler in back and d30 in front. If I need a lot more work than I expect, should I be fine with 35's and upgraded gears?

I have run 35 x 14.5" Pit Bull Rockers and stock d30 and 27 spline C8.25. Gears were 3.07 and ran Aussie locker up front and open in the rear, at the time. Only broke a u joint up front but I was being stupid, otherwise no troubles. I have since downgraded to 33 x 12.5 because I was constantly afraid of breaking.

The first question I gotta ask when I see 8" lift and 36" tires is what is your budget? Your axles will hold up if you drive easy. You add a lot of rotational weigh when getting up in the 35+ range which in turn relays that stress on the axles/ DS's. I've heard people compare the 8.25 to a 44. Idk if it's true, but 8.25's seem pretty reliable. Your 30 is good for some abuse as well, but like I said, you gotta wheel pretty easy or risk snapping things apart.
It seems like you have taken some of the other components into consideration, but there are other things, as well. A SYE kit and at least a longer rear shaft, poss a TC drop, many steering upgrades, better u joints, longer break lines... The list goes on. Obviously there are ways around some things that will save you some bank but no matter what, goin up that much is expensive. Good luck.

37's on a D30 is pushing the limit. 37's on a 27 spline 8.25 might be a little sketchy too. The 8.25 is comparable to the D44, if its the 29 spline one which you do not have.
If I were doing that much lift and tires, I would swap in a D44 front and an 8.8 rear
Edit: I'm sorry, you do have the 29 spline 8.25. I would still put in an 8.8 rear IMO

Yea, I lifted my jeep that i just sold with 6.5" lift so I know all that good stuff with the sye and longer brake lines and such, i am just wondering how it would work with 35's. thanks for the luck, i will need it..knowing me, i will snap an axle sooner or later...

lol, at least you have the 8.25 rear... I have the D35 on 31's and it makes me nervous. I'm gonna run to the JY and see if I can snag an 8.25 to swap in.

I've been running 35" AT's on my toy's stock axles for a while. I had a vacuum disconnect in the front and lucky enough a non c-clip rear. Got rid of the 3 piece for a two piece. Just swapped the shafts from an 87. I'm pretty rough on them bc I carry spares, JIC. Never needed them.
Maybe I'll try a little harder...

you can fit 37 on 4.5" - 6.5" lift with tons of trimming
no reason to go to 8" unless you are building a strict mud truck... other than that the 80s are over

I broke my 27spline 8.25 on the first hardctrail I did after doing grizzly front and 4.88s I also broke a front small joint d30 shaft. Ive since swapped to 29spline in the rear and bigger ujoints in the front. Fingers crossed I havent broke anything since and stepped up to 35s

i've been running 36 inch bias ply irocks, on beedlocks with stock late model d30 (non disco/large u-joints) and stock xj44 rear, on stock 3.54 gearing.
yeah, it's not gonna win a drag race, but it's not a daily, and still gets me to the trails. once on the trails, 4lo makes it wheel alright. sure, regearing to 4.56 would be ideal, but was planning on going 1 ton, and don't want to waste money on stock axles. but they work fine. broke a few u-joints in the front a few times, but when you can swap out an axle in a half hour, it's not that bad.

It all comes down to the final part, the drivers foot control processing unit, the FCPU. drive it hard and you can break an axle with stock tires, drive it easy and you can run 40 inch tires.

I thought 3.55 with 33s was just barely livable i new i was wrong ounce finally gearing to 4.88 trails became fun and drivability all around greatly improved.
3.55 and 39s id just assume burn it as drive it even on the street.
