Howdy help mates . 2000 Cherokee xj has a big fat O ring at the inner axle seal ( as seen in pic with my big fat finger pointer ) and I can't for the life of me find it on line or know the correct definition of it. Anyone been there done that ?

 

Leave it alone. Nothing to do with sealing up the axle shafts

I'm guessing that got used instead of rtv to seal the axle tubes to the housing at the factory.

Thats not actually an o-ring. Its the sealant they use when pressing in the axle tubes to prevent leaks.

 

Thank you. So , I took it out because I didn't want the fragments to eventually get into the new lube. Should I replace it with a bead of RTV ?. I think eventually the RTV would do the same.

 

Shouldn't be necessary to put another bead of RTV in there.
