Looking for advise on what to use. I tried black fluid film and it melted all over my driveway! I have seen bad videos on rubberized coatings so not sure which route to go.

What do you mean melted over the driveway? I've used regular fluid film and it's worked great. I don't own a sprayer so I just used a paintbrush to paint it on, which worked great. Undercoating works good until it's chipped by a rock then rust slowly works it's way underneath the surface of the coating.

 

I wish I would have taken pictures. I coated the entire bottom and after I drove in 110 degree weather, the coating started dripping all over my driveway.

 

Wow I've never heard of that happening. I wonder if the black dye lowers the viscosity
I found this video pretty helpful when trying to figure out what to apply. Might help you decide as well.

I have found that the rubberized undercoat does not last. And as previously mentioned, if water gets in anywhere, then the coating just accelerates the corrosion while concealing it at the same time.

However, I have found that pure “asphalt” undercoating sticks well. But it can’t be painted and it gets sticky in the heat since it is literally tar.

 

Never seen this stuff before, any info on it, price, surface prep, etc. We’re finishing up some rust repair on my xj now and I’ve spent the last 6 weeks trying to figure out what the best thing to coat the undercarriage will be, it’ll be a mix of clean metal in some spots and some surface rust in others.

 

I have also tried to figure this out and my conclusion was that the manufactures are on to something with simply using paint. I now view paint as a thing that needs to be serviced and sometimes replaced. All products claiming otherwise are just trying to sell you something with exaggerated claims. Some products are better than others but it’s impossible to get to the bottom of it. I feel like it’s kinda like trying to justify a viscosity other than the factory spec: maybe, but probably not.

Unless project farm says so. I follow his advise with total blind faith

 

Yeah, that was what I was getting it narrowed down to, just coating everything heavy with brush on rustoleum black, and touching it up every year in the fall. I can see spending hundreds of dollars on these coatings and having them not hold up anyway because tbh, there is no way I’m gonna be able to get the entire undercarriage prepped correctly.

And yes, project farm is the only YouTuber that I can say I have full 100% confidence in his content lol

 

So I decided to just do some Rustoleum for now. Looks great and will give me time to test and decide which way to go but for now Rustoleum looks great.

I went to local coin car wash and did 3 rounds of decreasing with Engine Bright Foam Cleaner (3 cans). On the second round I scrubbed with a brush, mostly the skid plates, differentials and suspension. I did use Gloss Black, maybe I should have gone with semi gloss, but can't complain with the results.
