I guess best was not the greatest term lol. Basically a shock that will work and not break the bank. Do most people just press out the bar pin on their stock shock and use that?

Bilstein 5100's are the normal go to. They are a good shock. You can spend a lot more, but for slow speed trail running and daily driving, they will perform. They even work fine when you are loaded down with gear.

IF you are planning HIGH speed driving on bumpy dirt roads (i.e. overlanding) 5100's DO EXPERIENCE fade when they heat up. They are NOT made for this application.

As for the bar pin, you can press it out if you have access to a press, though the pin is vulcanized to the bushing so you will need to pick up some replacements at O'Reilly's (less than $10). Poor man's solution is to drill out the rubber bushing in 3 to 4 places with about a 1/4" bit, then wriggle it out with some pliers/vise grips and/or push it out against a curb.

Any specific part number that would fit the xj? I am seeing a lot of options and sizes in the 5100

If you know what size your lift is, any reputable off road shop should be able to get you the right length.

When I order shocks, I just call up 4WheelParts - they usually have the best price anyways, and my club gets money back.

I tell them what size lift I have, they ship the part. It's always been the right size so far -

(Bilsteins come in size ranges i.e. 0-2" 3-5" 6-8" 8-10", etc, so it's not really rocket science.)

If you try to go through NAPA or something, they won't have a clue and you will need to figure out full drop and full compression and provide those dimension ranges (15.5" compressed - 27" extended). Honestly, unless there is a MAJOR price difference, just go to an offroad shop and let them figure it out.
