He could use an old vanity to cut down and use for brackets.

 

I'm not using an actual bed frame for a rack, just the metal. After looking at the pics, I may be able to fab my own. As I'm going through these I'm seeing a big difference in the size of the rails. For future reference for anyone, I'd suggest using the king size bed rails lol.

 

U gonna put a mattress on top for some stargazing?

 

I have roof racks that i am thinking about using that as my supports an build from them.

 

These things are pretty sturdy. It took me 2 hours to drill out the rivets that hold all of the brackets and bars on. I'm going to buy an angle grinder tomorrow, should make this alot easier.

Or take all that metal to the scrap yard, take that money and buy some tubing and a better one. I had the same idea. Posted about it and was basically told its crap metal. The metal was off a $2500 temperpedic, so thought why not find out this should be better than a $500 bed. And had the time, cleaned up the metal and made some joint welds with the 110v. The metal it's self crumbled at the edge of the weld. Tried it with a 220v still no good.
And don't buy ( with intent to weld EMT pipe ) it melts and the fumes made me puke in the middle of the night. I was welding out side in a gental breeze ( though I was safe )

i used bed frame for my roof rack. i just used it for the base and used conduit for the rest.

 

Just know that bed frames are very high carbon steel. They are very hard to weld on. Drilling holes is even worse.

For a roof rack, I would take all the frames to the scrap yard and use the money towards some good steel. You will save yourself headaches in the end!

 

Got it all drilled, cut, and a jig built for welding the angles. I hope it's not too difficult to weld. I'm using a mig welder. I'll see tomorrow. If it works out I'll post pics.

Thanks. I use bedframe for all sorts of things. I have a ton of it. I have no problems drilling or welding it.

That particular rack is getting replaced soon. It was just kinda slapped together in an afternoon for the hell of it. I got some metal pool fencing I'm gonna use for the next one and better mounts.

 

I got the first rack welded today. It wasn't difficult at all. The only problem I had was getting it square because I didn;t cut it straight lol. I am welding 2 rectangles, then welding stands in the corners, then stacking them on top of eachother. Afterwards going to hit it with bedliner.
