Why does Chrysler have black cables going to both PDC studs on my 1996 XJ?
Does a '96 have a fusible link or a fuse in front of the PDC?
I think the cable from the alternator starts out as black but turns green, the fusible link part, at the stud on the PDC.
An '00 has a fusible link so there is only one stud there.
But the cable from that 1 stud to the battery is definitely red.

Fusible link (I think, thick black wire between both posts) with black on both studs. Should have taken a pic, will try to remember later.
Forgot I had a picture of the set up before I upgraded my battery cables from test fitting the bolt for the mega fuse to replace the fusible link.
Cable on the left from the alt starts out as black but you can see where it turns green at the stud.
And you can see where the cable on the right is red that goes from the stud to the battery.

Will look at mine again later and post a pic. My new favorite wire place has 6 AWG in green, but not 4 AWG or thicker They do have weatherproof heat shrink in green, which is way more expensive than the wire. http://www.bestboatwire.com/marine-w...-battery-cable

Why do you want green battery cable wire? LOL
The green wire is my shot is the fusible part of the cable.
OK, here is what I have. 1996 XJ Sport, 242.Yes, I was mistaken, the fat one on the right starts off as red at the battery and has black heat shrink at the PDC. I am not familiar enough with this yet to know what the black criss-cross wires are in the middle:

I am just guessing here but that black wire that looks like it goes from the left stud to the right does just that. Just connects the 2 studs and nothing else. And that is your fusible link. Looks like it even says fuse link on it.
You saw the picture of my PDC. And even though the left slot did not come with a bolt in it from the factory I have a little theory. And thinking I might be more right looking at your set up.
So I think that at one time Jeeps came from the factory with a mega type fuse between the 2 studs before they went to the fusible link. Yours almost looks like a transition period. They had not yet attached the fusible link to the cable coming from the alternator, like in mine, and that is what they did. Now mine had the empty slot there on the left in front of the PDC still. So it almost appears that while they revised how the cables are set up never changed the PDC box itself.

My year is famous for being a transition year, so you are probably right.
I know that a fuse will fit there, because I added a second stud and put a fuse between the two and ditched the fuse able link.
I did just like you did when I upgraded my battery cables. And the fact that the slot is still there on an '00 and a mega fuse fits perfectly in there when you put a bolt in that slot is why I think Jeep might have run a mega fuse there before they went to a fusible link.
Seeing how I have no experience with older Jeeps just one of my stupid theories.
