Bastardized NP231

I was looking into something last night and I think I got it. The pre 96 xjs have a short slip yoke on the 231 and a longer tailcone, and the 96+ 231s have a short tail cone and long slip yoke. Correct me if I am wrong or before I do something really really stupid...

I have a 1991 cherokee with 231 that I want to hack and tap. Can I go to the wreckers and pull the *** end off of a 96+ 231 and slam it onto my 91? Therfore eliminating the long tailcone whilst still retaining the seal?? Somebody crunch this for me and let me know.

Also can i grab the front yoke and jam it on the rear of my abortionized 231, drill n tap and use a front shaft for complete jy sye?

lolz_jeep 04-24-2011 09:39 AM

why are you slamming everything in? lol:rofl:

I have wondered the same thing...

MisAdventure 04-24-2011 10:31 AM

Slamming is fun.

On the serious side tho, i will fully document the idea if I get somebody to say it will work, i don't have money to waste on all this if its not going to work.

outkast 04-24-2011 10:39 AM

It will work!:whistling2::whistling2::whistling2: I really have no clue but if it does I would like to know.

And no the front yoke will not fit on the rear shaft. If it did we would all be doing that!

then i guess it would just be easier to get IROs hack and tap kit with the rear end housing included in the kit.

lolz_jeep 04-24-2011 01:32 PM

or just get a sye and get it over with

garb.man 04-24-2011 01:39 PM

....and slam it in!

that is what he is talking about... He is talking about getting a Hack-n-tap, which is where the SYE started...

I am so tired of people acting like HnT is a 'Hack Job' way to do things... (LOL, I made a funny) IF it is done right it is JUST as good as most prebuilt SYE kits, in many cases it takes less time to do a HnT SYE... If you are good with tools then go HnT, if you are not so good I would go with a bolt in kit

so what is the best kit? well that is really up to your wallet... or your old lady's purse
