axle swap options
 

well i currently have a 98 xj with 4.5 short arm lift on 35", everything else stock...i wheel pretty hard but do pretty much only mud trails hardly any rocks...i like the swamp, lol...but have not had any issues with my axles thus far, which i consider myself lucky thus far...

well i just recently sold my tires and am now running 33" tires...bald, just until i can buy new tires in a few weeks, but i wanted to go biggger for more ground clearance, was thinking anywhere between 37" and 40" tires...which means i should def look into better axle setup and was thinking of 4.88 gears...

im wondering what are my options, bolt on preferable, but looking for something that will be tough enough for 40" tires locked on all 4, yet not kill my clearance or budget....

so what are my options, and whats it gonna run me$$?

edit...from what i see the rear is about 3k and the fron is about 6-7k....the rear could be interesting but the fron is insane pricey

my max budget was in the range of 4-5k....

sounds like you're due for some full widths. Dana 60 rear and 44 front sounds like a winner. Not going to find anything bolt in though.

well by bolt in i mean fit properly, bracket relocation i can get done by a friend...my thoughts were something that fits right in with least amount of parts exchange, and something available that i wont look forever to find


i currently have 15" rims, can i keep them? or will i need to go bigger?

for a budget of 4-5k what should i look for?

would this work for the back and is it a decent price? dodge dana 60 1ton 3500 posi-lok 4/10 gear 500$

Quadratec quoted me 6000 front and rear. Just a little more than I care to put into mine

ur not going to find anything that is "bolt on", "cheap", and "strong" in the same sentance. JY full-widths are a great option. G2's rock jocks are ridiculously high priced

Lotta work or lotta money. I don't like either one so I stick to 35s

prob best bang for the buck is a ford 8.8 for the rear. as close to bolt on as it gets, same bolt pattern, 31 spline axles, thicker tubes, lots of aftermarket support, disc breaks and plentiful and cheap at the jy...

front, prob a d44 w/a truss.

yeah i know a few guys with ford 8.8 on their yj with 39" swampers and they have no problem...

but i was told that a ford 8.8 is about the same strength as a d44, and just a bit better than a 8.25...i currently have a 8.25....

so whats the truth?


as for the front....what d44? if i go to the jy what do i ask them for?

^^u wont give up on that 8.8 will u. he wants something that can hold up to abuse and 40s, i dont think the 8.8 can do that too well

i have seen 4 people beak 8.8 on 35s so i dont like them

No way. I love my 8.8. Did the axle tubes spin or shafts snap?
