Which axle first?
Happy new year everyone,
2001 xj 4wd, 4.0 auto, daily driver
I got stuck in the snow trying to cross a corn field deer hunting yesterday. I was in 4wheel low but ended up with one rear wheel spinning and one front wheel spinning. If I was going to put in a locker is there an advantage to adding to the front or rear axle first? I can't afford both at the same time.
Thanks.

Id say front...unless you plan on dropping the cash on a selectable. That way you dont know its there during normal street driving (with it in the front). If you throw a lunchbox in the rear then youll hear it during normal driving.

It's really not that bad in the rear. But I would do front first to because I don't know what your rear axle is and if it's the d35 it's not worth locking

I'd lock the front. unless you can afford a full carrier for the rear

i'm running a grizzly locker in the rear and yea it hops around a little but i would rather have the jumping around in the rear than the front. I guess that makes for a decent question to ask:
how wouldn't a lunchbox or full carrier locker not hop around in the front when turning. Both front tires are going to spin the same speed regardless of it being in 4wd or not?... Obviously a selectable front locker would eliminate that so no questions there.
i opted out of buying a front locker for my D30 for now as i wasn't to sure about driving capabilities on the road with it hoping around. I deff wasn't gonna spend $1400 for a selectable when i could just build a better d44 or d60 for the same price as the locker alone.

Sorry I should have elaborated. I have the C8.25 in the back. It's my DD but I do hunt in Northern Wisconsin so it sees some off road but nothing trying to push limits or rock crawl. Just had to eat a little crow when my pride and joy had to get drug out of a cornfield with an old john deere tractor. Thanks for the responses everyone.

my point was why waste the money on a locker that likely won't really be needed. Especially on a vehicle that's more DD oriented...
I get by pretty well with my trail rig with only have a locker in the rear, as do many of my wheeling buddies. So spending a few hundred dollars + on something extra that's not needed seems impractical. Now if you feel like you have to have it then cool more power to ya.

Go with a front locker if you will only use 4x4 occasionally. I put a Spartan in my D30 and it is great. Driving around town I can only tell its even in if I turn tight into a parking spot. It does great off-road pulling me through and over a ton of stuff.
