AX15 HP capacity?

AX15 HP capacity?
For those of you that have the AX15 5 speed and have put stroker motors or have done a v8 swap how well has the AX15 held up to higher HP? The reason I ask is because I have a Dakota with the AX15 and I plan on swapping either a 5.2 (318) or 5.9 (360) in to it and I want to keep the AX15. I have read where people put SBC V8s in front of the AX15 and it has held up fine. Whichever engine I go with I am planning on building it for around 300 HP.

The AX15 actually makes a very clean conversion to most GM engines and because it is a stronger transmission, it is well matched for the Chevy V6 and Chevy Small Block V8 andGen. III+ V8 engines. Details on these conversions can be found here. You may also find the following articles of interest:

The AX15 transmission has always been a great transmission able to handle the torque and horsepower of most V8s. The biggest problem has always been the availability of new units. With the lack of availability of a new NV3550, we revisited the possibly of obtaining the Aisin Warner AX15 transmission and were successful. Although the torque specifications are not listed on this transmission in any service manual, we feel it‘s similar enough to the NV3550. The NV3550 was the transmission that superseded the AX15; and Jeep used the same engine with the same vehicle ratings. With the availability of AX15 transmissions, we can now offer some additional transmission retrofit applications.
The NV3550 5 speed is rated at 300 ft.-lbs. at 7200 GVW.

I might be at 300hp at the crank and my ax15 has held up just fine for me. I will eventually start pushing more power through it. What is more of a surprise is the clutch hasnt slipped at all.

From those that I have known that have run strokers, superchargers, 5.3's etc. with an AX-15, the main issue they ran into was getting the clutch to last, and finding one that wasn't so grabby in first.
Other than that, most I know rarely had any issues.

You may guess I learned this from having to pull my trans in the driveway in a freezing, blowing snowstorm to fix a clutch mistake. lol

As mentioned before, just try not to get one that's overly grabby if you can. That was the biggest gripe of anyone I knew running them. It was either go or no-go, which even with a handle throttle it make crawling a bit of a PITA at times.
