AW4 manual shifting mod
For engine braking, which is what everyone wants offroading.
Engine braking is not accomplished by torque converter lockup.
Engine braking is accomplished by keeping the sprag gear engaged.
Keeping the sprag gear engaged is accomplished by having the trans lever no higher than 1 gear above the gear that the trans is currently in.
Sprag gear is engaged when-
In 1st gear and the trans lever is in 1-2
in 2nd gear and the trans lever is in 1-2 or 3
in 3rd gear and trans lever is in 3 or D
in 4th gear and trans lever is in D.
Sprag gear is NOT engaged when-
in 1st gear and lever is in 3 or D
in 2nd gear and lever is in D
So what happens is, most who use the switches , RAD shifter or whatever to manually control the trans, usually leave the gear lever in D and turn the switches on. So the trans lever is in D, 1st and 2nd gear do not have the sprag gear engaged and engine braking.
I hope that is as clear as mud.

thank you very much cobra, that is more then what I was looking for! I greatly appreciate all the ideas everyone has given to me in this thread! ill let you all know what my final decision is once I actually have the money and time to knock it out.
Now if the Winters Shifter only fit in the stock console.
There is no 'automatic' with the Winters Shifter, Only manual shifting all the time.
There is no detent/stop between the lever moving left-right for 3rd-4th shifting. IDK if it could be accidentally bumped or wobble and it would shift between 3rd and 4th.
It would be great in an off road only vehicle and my shifter of choice. Not so in a street DD.

I will say I dont recall ever having the 3-4 side shifting, do so in error. Even at In BITD Bluewater race where the whoops and dips and landings were not so fair.
