Look up an accusump. Instead of having an external oil pump you plumb in an external source for oil. If the pressure ever drops it opens a valve and pumps pressurized oil into the engine. This is probably more of what you are looking for.

That would still use a wet sump oil pan, right? It'd be a secondary source for oil?

Yes. Factory oil system plus a backup should the engine loose pressure.

I think his issue is oil pan clearance. He wants to do away with it.

ive been tryin to get my dad to make a dry sump setup on my xj a while ago, but making a new pan, runnin steel braided lines, figuring out a location for the external oil tank and mount location for the pump became too much of a hassle and expensive to fab on a 4.0 in a xj

its not really going to be a dry sump system unless you put in an external tank. because even if you do a single stage pump with a custom lower pan you wont be able to hold enough oil for the motor. but when you run a dry sump system with a tank, dont be surprised when you have to run up to 3 gallons of oil or more
