Air filter through hood under scoop? Not for snorkle
Hey, I was looking into ways to move my air filter, not for snorkling or anything awesome. But, just to get cooler air in there and maybe improve performance. And, mainly to free up all that room where that box is for other.. um, experiments.
So some people put theirs in the glove box. Other people do the snorkle thing. But, what about just running it straight up, or mostly straight up, right into the filter, a conical filter probably.
It looks like it might peek up through the hood a few inches. But, that might look nice covered with some kind of small scoop or something.
The only reason I can think of for NOT doing it, is that maybe the air filter would get dirtier faster?
If you think this idea sucks, pun intended, please let me know where you think I should stick it.... um, the air filter that is.
Someplace cool and maybe not so windy? But, not in the cab either, that seems like asking for extra noise.

I've seen people build a fiberglass airbox thing that seals to the hood out of the TOP(intake tube and all) of the stock airbox. allows you to use a stock filter and everything then they had one of those ricer hood scoops going to bring air into the box. Seemed like an interesting idea. But I go through too much water when i wheel to do that.
Basically ditch the bottom of the air box, flip the top upside down, attach the filter to that and build a raised lip on the hood that seals to the box, true cold air intake and ram air if im right.

But, I seem to remember as a kid those muscle cars that had the big round air filters on top of the engine... why can't I just stick a cone shaped filter right on top of the intake, cut a hole in the hood, and maybe put something over whatever peeks out?
Then I'd have extra room in there for some other fun toys and it's not like we often see water anyone would cross in any truck, out here in the desert. My only concern is the filter getting clogged with dust all the time.
I was hoping there'd be some simple way to do that. I guess nobody really mods these trucks in dry places?

I actually just got their other product there, the OEM replacement filter. It made a nice noticeable difference right away.

Yes, as mentioned, it's the Spectre CAI for XJ.
$149 At Summit with free shipping and really easy to install. All you need is a 3" hole saw...
I recommend smoothing/polishing the lips on the intake part that is attached to the firewall, just to smooth the air flow and reduce the whistle...
Just this CAI + throttle body + injectors, added a ton of power and improved my mileage by 3 to 4 mpg. Mangnaflow goes in next week and will see if I can squeeze more mpg...
