I have one hardwired to a relay. It fills two tires at once in under 5 minutes. Coupled to an Optima yellow top, it will fill all 4 tires without engine running.
The key is air volume. High pressure is not necessary, just 30-50 pounds for tires. Check the CFM rating, Cubic Feet per Minute. The 400 is 2.5cfm.
I have the compressor mounted next to the rear cubby hole and the cubby stores the air hoses.

http://www.viaircorp.com/400P-rv-auto.html $100??

Yes I have the VIAIR a larger one but still small in size it will handle 150psi and fill a 35" tire in short order. I think its rated for continuous duty and came with a lot of accessories like coiled 25' air hose, air gauge/deflater, several other pieces also a very nice carrying case.
I bought it at JC Whitney and had a $40 coupon they had emailed me for purchases over $200. The # a 45043 $300 - $40 net $260 free shipping. Now I can air down when I get there and back up again when I leave and not have to wait forever with the old one from Wal-Mart.
I checked its a 450C it looks like but I really like it.

Sweet, that would be the VIAR 450. 100% duty cycle.
The 400 has the same flow rate at 33% duty cycle, can run 45 minutes continuously at pressure.

I suggest the VIAR 400. Or the VIAR 4x4 and RV compressor kit.

When comparing the 400p and 400p-rv (which you linked) it looks like the only difference is that the rv version has really long hoses. Am I missing something?

The other is meant to be hard mounted and hardwired. The hose has a threaded end for a tank or airline.
Note,Any compressor that plugs into a cigarette lighter socket will take forever to fill tires.

Correct, the compressor is the same but the RV version is meant to be portable, has a handle, quick connect air fitting, larger base, and alligator clips for battery.

Filling 4 tires is well within it's 33% duty cycle. Keep in mind, it gets hot.
