Default Advice on new shocks for 3" lift

Hey folks,

I need to replace all 4 shocks on my '92 bright white reconditioning project. The ones I have now I've liked over the years and seem to have held up well, they're Pro Comp MX6114 MX6 Series Shocks.

These work well with my 3" skyjacker lift and the ride was good for a long time. Now they need to be replaced as they've rusted up so much they're barely functional. Anyways, does anyone have any suggestions for better shocks? The majority of the driving on this thing is on road or some off pavement dirt, with a tiny bit of true off road travel.

ah, thanks for the advice. yeah I hit them with penetrating oil about a month ago. If they fight me at all I'll cook them with a cold tig torch for a second to get them nice and compliant

Anyone have thoughts on the RC V2's?

When I did mine one side came out fine
the other side I mig welded a bigger nut on the bolt and it came out fine.

heating with a tig would work too... but the bolt was rounded off also.

yeah if the bolt is in bad shape I'll weld a nut on with the mig.

I just used this trick to pull the end of a broken off screw out of the front fiber glass grill assembly

I’ve used a few different brands of shocks on lifted vehicles over the last years. I now will only use OME or Bilsteins on lifted vehicles. Last set of BDS were junk. Noisy with low quality hardware.

I got to do something about my shocks with my vehicle now to be ~3.5" raised, up from 2",

(unknown) but +70k miles since I got it

I do have a front pair that I will measure, looks like they will do, came of a lifted truck, look to be in good condition

But I do need to attend rears carefully, as they are quite critical on an XJ

If I buy quality shocks such as Bilstein in Australia, its excessively expensive.

I will check Rock Auto, would prefer some ability to change settings

Maybe I could go airbag rear. I have an ARB compressor

Maybe I cant make my 30yr old XJ ride like my sis Audi, but it keeps getting better, and I want that trend to continue

when ********* ask me why I drive around in an old POS (almost never happens these days), I can reply; " because it will still be on the road when your 100k POS is on the scrapheap mate"

I could relay an amusing tale but will refrain

For the rears you can move the lower shock mount up and use your existing shocks.

Good thought. Is that optimal though ?

Will it make any difference to the performance of the shock (I dont think it would)

It probably would be the most "inexpensive" solution in some way, however I see a couple of disadvantages.

If it makes the shock mount hang down lower, that is not good, they already hand down more than I would prefer

In addition, during my LCA bracket repair, I found that cutting the factory weld was a huge pita, very time consuming, the weld material was extremely hard & deep

A plasma cutter would have been very helpful in that case, but I dont have one (yet)

It moves the rear shock up on the bracket allowing it to be shortened.
The OME are another option to the Bilsteins but both are around 100-120 each.

I ended up going with RC N3's for my lift. We'll see how they do. I thought about Bilstein, but was worries the ride would be too stiff
